Nevsky Deluxe

The room that I had was smaller than I would prefer. However, it had a double high ceiling that faced the courtyard away from any street noise. The bedding was clean and comfortable. The bath was marble tile with plenty of hot water. The restaurant in the hotel was adequate with a fantastic sauerkraut soup and a decent buffet breakfast. The location is just a minute walk from Nevsky Prospect and a short walk to the Hermitage. Location is very good for walking around the historic city center. I was very happy with my stay here of 5-days. There is a very good Irish pub (O'hooligans) on the same street close to Nevsky Prospect. The pub has a good selection of beer and good food. Down the block is a small supermarket where you can buy any food that you want to take with you for day trips.

I often stay at the hotels of the Nevsky group when I visit St.Petersburg. They are perfectly located, have a friendly and helpful staff, and give you a minimum but sufficient standard for a most affordable price of what you need for a professional stay. This time I had some expectations, trying the DELUXE version of the hotel chain. Well.. The entrance is through a yard filled with parked cars, garbage containers and plastic sacks of the same kind. You have to pass a narrow passage and a locked iron gate, where it was not unusual to find men pissing behind the containers.. The rooms are quite ok, mine was with the sleeping area on a messanine over the main room, and the bathroom had a corner whirlpool bathtub! There was no reception in the building, but a kitchenette for making food and some chairs for sitting down. Flat screen tv on both levels of the room. Reception and breakfast are in the neighbouring building of Nevsky Grand Hotel. Breakfast is ok but sometimes very crowded due to bus company tourists, but the supply of freshly maid pancakes makes up for it all. Fruit salad EVERY day would have made me most satisfied. Free wifi in all areas is a great advantage. To conclude, the Nevsky Hotel DeLuxe offers comfortable accomodation and covers your professional needs in the most attractive area of St. Petersburg, close to the Hermitage and the Russian Museum. DeLuxe is, however, measured against the other hotels of the chain, and a bit exaggerated compared to the standard offered. Still, I would definately recommend a stay here, provided expectations of the standard are not too elevated. It's better with a centrally located hotel with the necessary equipment as wifi, then opulent luxury/business hotels of former times .
