Protea Hotel by Marriott Nelspruit

We appreciated the hardwood floors in the room and the overall cleanliness. There is currently construction going on behind the hotel, which we were worried would be noisy, but our room was quiet despite being on a main street. There was one carafe of still drinking water provided on a complimentary basis, and two carafes of still water in the public lobby area near the front desk, but no other water stations elsewhere in the hotel for refilling water bottles. The king-sized bed in our room was a bit hard for our taste, and while we had specifically requested foam pillows due to allergies to feathers, our room had two down/feather pillows and two foam ones. The room had a small frig, safe, desk, and kettle. Unfortunately there is no lift in the hotel, which is something to be aware of for anyone with mobility issues, although the hotel is only two floors high. There is also an outdoor pool. Prices are about average. We would stay again.

In Nelspruit you want to be close to the centre, casino, airport and mall. You want to have air conditioning and a swimming pool. This hotel ticks those boxes. If you security conscious I would take a mark off or two as the hotel is open and not always monitored in my humble opinion or at least does not feel monitored. Food was good but not great. The food you would accept at a three star and maybe tolerate at best at a four star but definitely not rave about. I would suggest 6,5/10 on the food menu and taste/quality. Breakfast was definitely three stars. The beds and rooms are comfortable but have been well lived in. Good for passing trade and tours. Honeymooners think twice. Cost benefit ratio 3/5.

We had another amazing stay at this hotel, a true hidden gem in Nelspruit. The staff is outstanding, always friendly, engaging, and genuinely welcoming. Their warmth and professionalism create a home-away-from-home atmosphere. Check-in & Marriott Bonvoy Recognition Check-in was smooth and personal, with a warm chat while our details were processed. The staff remembered us from past stays, which was a lovely touch. As Bonvoy members, we received all benefits without asking, including an upgrade to a larger King room and a thoughtful welcome gift of biltong, dried fruits, and chips. The Property & Rooms The hotel has a unique charm, blending modern and African country chic. The courtyard, lounge, and pool area are beautifully maintained and add to the relaxing vibe. However, some areas are showing signs of age, and a refresh would be welcome. Our King room was comfortable, with a cozy atmosphere and plenty of natural light, but the floors were worn, and the shower pressure remained an issue. Despite this, the bed was fantastic, with high-quality pillows and bedding ensuring a great night’s sleep. Housekeeping & Dining Housekeeping was impeccable, with rooms cleaned to perfection. The Fig Tree Restaurant offered an excellent breakfast buffet, including fresh fruit, pastries, a live cooking station, and high-quality hot dishes. Dinner was equally impressive, featuring local specialties. The bar had a great ambiance, and we enjoyed fantastic mojitos by the pool. Final Thoughts This hotel is a perfect retreat in Nelspruit, with exceptional staff and a welcoming atmosphere. While a refresh is needed, the service and warmth more than make up for it. We highly recommend it and are excited to return!
