Protea Hotel Klerksdorp was built in 1995, renovated in 2014, and offers 91 rooms over 2 floors, restaurant & conference rooms, and a charming garden. Furnishings and decoration provide a business atmosphere. Service is friendly. Secure parking and stable WiFi. Our room had desk & chair, tea facility & fridge, wardrobe & safe, club-chair & TV, airco & terrace with table & chairs, and a good kingsize bed. We had a separate bathroom with washbasin, toilet, and shower over the bath. All was clean. There is a good buffet breakfast: eggs made to order, cold cuts & cheeses, breads & toast, cereals & fruits, milk & yoghurts, juices & preserves, rolls & croissants, tea & coffee (Italian coffee machine). Protea Hotel Klerksdorp is a comfortable hotel and we had a good stay. Recommended.

So I do not usually write more than one review for the same place, last year April I was there and I did not like it one bit. However, this month I went back because my company could not book me anywhere else and I must say it has improved a lot like a lot. I do not know if it is under a new management or what but the staff is more friendlier and helpful - you must know that when a staff is willing to assist even on their way out because their shift is over that they care. I mean i was walking from my car with luggage and a staff member with her hand bag (clearly on her way home) stopped and turned back to assist me with my luggage until the porter the potter came through - that was like "wow", everyone was genuinely friendly and helpful one can sense they are all working towards a common goal to take care of the customer. Oh and the premises got an upgrade to i.e. the bathrooms have been repainted and tiled. Big ups for the improvements - huge difference from last year April.

Check-in is usually quick at Marriott group hotels, but this was not the case here. The gentleman at the desk took ages to assist us (with no other guests around) and came across as fed up, almost like we were interrupting him. We asked for a late check-out as Marriott elite members, and he said "ok," but never actually noted it. The next morning housekeeping said we need to check out despite booking the late check out, and then reception confirmed that no late check-out had been recorded. This lack of attention left us disappointed. The gentleman was rude, dismissive and unattentive. The room itself was a decent size, with comfortable beds and pillows, though the bathroom was very small and the overall look of the room felt dated. The light from the passageway also shines through the door at night, which was disturbing. The shower leaked quite a lot, and to top it off, the TV didn’t work properly.. The channels were all shaky. In 2025, this really shouldn’t still be an issue at a hotel under the Marriott/Protea name. On the plus side, the grounds are neat and clean, and my children enjoyed a swim in the cute, well-kept pool area. Unfortunately, when we came back to shower, there was no hot water. Reception simply told us to use another room, which felt very inconvenient, especially with kids. A couple of other details stood out: We were not given the WiFi passcode on check-in and had to go back to ask for it. The welcome fruit platter was a nice gesture, but it came mixed with biltong. This made it unsuitable for us as vegetarian/halal eaters, which could have been avoided with a little more thought. Overall, the hotel has potential — the property is clean and not badly maintained — but the service we received left a bitter taste. If you do stay, I recommend asking for the bigger, more updated rooms at the end of the hotel (room numbers 301 and up). I hope management takes note, because this could easily be a much better stay with a few fixes.
