Protea Hotel Stellenbosch

It was the worse hotel I ever stayed in

We checked in at 3 pm, returned from dinner at 10 pm, & found worm-like insects crawling all over the walls. The desk clerk, clearly used to bug infestations, said they were millipedes & harmless. I asked if we could change rooms. She said the hotel was full, & anyway they're in all the rooms. She said she'd send someone over to spray poison. Ten minutes elapsed before we got back to the room ten minutes later, & we found five more bugs, for a total of thirty-five. A man arrived carrying a broom. He said the people who sprayed the poison left at 5 pm but he could sweep them off the walls & ceiling & kill them. It really says something that we decided to leave immediately & try our luck finding other lodging rather than spend the night at a Protea hotel. A reply to our complaint confirmed the insect problem & said they'd refund the room rate. I find this absolutely insufficient -- have you ever driven the N2 close to midnight? -- & very close to a sick joke.

We had an excellent 3 day stay at the Protea Hotel by Marriott Stellenbosch & Conference Centre. The service was very good throughout the hotel. The restaurants are excellent with beautiful views.
