We originally thought about staying in the parador, but winced at the eye watering prices. Looking through TA we discovered this alternative, which turned out to be a gem. Both the staff and the proprietor could not have been more helpful. Lovely room, and excellent bathroom, in an historic building that just oozes charm, history and character. Parking also available, which is not to be sniffed at in Santillana del Mar!!
Good breakfast, and very well priced.

Had a lovely 2 night stay here at this beautiful hotel in the peaceful and very pretty town of Santillana del mar. We were in room 14 which was the last room on the third floor, no elevators, and the room was sort of an attic room so you had to be a bit careful of not hitting your head on some of the gorgeous low beams. Lovely view of the countryside and horses outside. Not a huge room but big enough, clean as a pin and had everything you needed for your stay, lovely and well designed bathroom with a great shower. Bed was a bit on the firm side for us, nice crisp cotton sheets, fan in the room but slept with the windows open letting the fresh cantabrian air in. If you are a light sleeper you may be disturbed by the church bell which chimes on the half hour and every hour with the time of day, you would hear this wherever you stay in town, just adds to the charm of the place. Breakfast starts at 9am so you have a lazy start to your day. The hosts are lovely and make you feel so welcome. Breakfast is very good, lovely cheeses and hams and really nice fresh buttered toast and freshly squeezed orange juice. On a nice day this can be taken on the outside patio with its lovely views. If you arrive by car you are allowed to drive into the town, along its cobbled roads to get to the hotel and can pull up in front whilst you check in, they have their own parking around the back in an area which is gated and locked, this can be accessed by climbing down the steps from the back of the hotel. Some lovely bars and restaurants here, in particular I can recommend the small family run Gran Duque, maybe ask the host at the hotel to book you a table there at the time of booking your room as without a reservation you probably have very little chance of getting in. There are several lounges on the various floors in the hotel and there is also a small bar. Lots of things to do and see in the area if using this hotel as a base. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, highly recommended.
