We have just returned from a week at Leonardo Hotel Suites/Apartments and have come away with very mixed feelings. There are some genuinely good things about this hotel, particularly its location and some of the staff, but unfortunately our experience of the accommodation itself was really disappointing from the offset. The biggest problem was our room... We were allocated apartment 2011, which is on the ground floor of the apartments complex with its entrance opening directly onto a public thoroughfare. The bedroom was literally a couple of metres from people walking past, throughout the day and night. This meant considerable noise and a real lack of privacy, and it was particularly disruptive at night. More importantly, the room we were given was not what we had expected from the photographs used on the hotel’s website and on Jet2. Upon entering the apartment for the first time, we noticed that the bedroom didn’t have the two large single beds (as shown in the pictures), but instead had a very low and narrow double bed. We subsequently discovered that room 2011 was actually an adapted/accessible room, and the layout and facilities were consequently very different from the images we had seen when booking and what we expected. The bathroom was a huge wet room with no shower screen, meaning water went across much of the floor whenever the shower was used. We ended up using towels as a makeshift dam to stop the water spreading. There were also prominent grab rails and metal structures around the toilet and shower area. The main room layout was also very different from the photographs. There was no wardrobe/cupboard in the main living area (as shown on the website), which was particularly problematic as we were travelling with our 14-year-old daughter (her sofa-bed was situated in this area) and as someone who is increasingly independent, needed somewhere to keep her clothes and toiletries. We ended up having to improvise storage using tables and chairs from around the apartment. When we shared our dissatisfaction with the reception staff, we were told that another room wasn’t available and that we would need to speak to the duty manager. She arrived about an hour and a half after we did and although very friendly and sympathetic, she continually stated that hotel was full and she couldn’t move us. She said she would keep in touch and see whether anything became available during our stay. Unfortunately, that was the last we heard about it. What was particularly disappointing was that the duty manager confirmed that the photographs were not representative of the type of room we had actually been allocated, despite those photographs being used to represent that room category. The cockroaches were also major problem! This was probably the issue that affected our enjoyment of the room most. We had cockroaches appearing in the apartment every day of our stay, mainly in the living area. We have photographs of them and also a video showing just how bad the situation became on one particular day, which we will attach to this review. Our 14-year-old daughter was understandably very distressed by them, and they disrupted her sleep. I ended up making sure that I was the first person into the living area each morning so that I could deal with any cockroaches before she saw them. We appreciate that insects can occur in a hot, Mediterranean climate, and we wouldn’t normally consider seeing the occasional insect grounds for a poor review. However, having to deal with cockroaches every day of a week’s holiday, and the effect this had on our daughter, was a very different matter. Housekeeping or not... We want to be fair here because the communal areas of the hotel appeared to be kept reasonably clean and well maintained. There were always plenty of staff working around the pool and other public areas, and we certainly wouldn’t describe the hotel as generally neglected. Our room was different. The cleaners came in on most days, but the cleaning seemed largely to consist of changing towels and straightening bed linen, not necessarily changing it. The main floors and bathroom didn’t appear to be swept or cleaned particularly often and, despite being directly next to the beach, the balcony never appeared to be cleaned at all. We were more than happy to sweep the balcony ourselves because we expected some sand to accumulate, but there wasn’t even a brush or any cleaning equipment provided, so we would have had to buy one ourselves. Very little information about how the hotel works Another surprising weakness was the lack of basic information for guests. There were several bars and facilities around the hotel, but we could never find any clear information explaining what was available, where it was or when it opened. For example, there was a signpost for a bar in reception but this was closed all week. There was a main entertainment area/bar but we had no idea when it opened or what entertainment was on. Food in the restaurant seemed to be themed, but we only found out what this was by working it out for ourselves. Indeed, dishes were only occasionally labelled, a significant issue for anyone that is vegetarian or has allergies. There were also no drinks menus that we could find. We were told that the bars could make a wide range of drinks, but there was no way of knowing what anything cost before ordering. Spirits and mixers appeared to be around €10, with soft drinks also relatively expensive. The issue isn’t simply that we thought the drinks were expensive. It’s that there was no transparent way to see the prices before ordering. Likewise, at the snack bar there was no menu. We were told to order at the main bar and then collect the food from the snack bar, but again there was very little information explaining how anything worked. We were on Half Board Plus. Breakfast and evening meals were included, together with some drinks with the evening meal, and we thought the standard of the food itself was perfectly acceptable. What we did like... There are definitely positives with this hotel. The location is excellent. Our apartment complex and the main hotel were very close together and essentially right on the beach. Being able to walk straight between the pool and the beach was fantastic. The pool was good, although it probably felt a little small for the number of guests. Despite that, we found sunbeds reasonably easy to obtain. Some of the reception staff were exceptionally helpful. We had an issue with a lost bag during our stay and the reception team couldn’t have done more to help us, which we really appreciated. And if you’re staying here, we’d strongly recommend walking a little further along the coast to Cala Nova beach. It doesn’t seem to get much mention, but we thought it was fantastic. Unlike the relatively sheltered bay at Es Canar, it has much bigger waves and was one of our favourite places during the holiday. Overall... We really wanted to like this hotel because the location is superb and there are clearly some very good people working here. Unfortunately though, the combination of being allocated a room that didn’t resemble the photographs we had booked from, the lack of privacy and noise from the ground-floor location, inadequate storage, poor housekeeping and, above all, having cockroaches appearing in our room every day, made this a three-star experience for us. The attached photographs and video show the room and cockroach issue, because we think it’s important that prospective guests can make their own judgement. Three stars from us. The hotel has a fantastic location and some excellent staff, but our particular room and the lack of communication about what we were actually booking made this a much less enjoyable stay than it should have been.

We booked a 4-star hotel; in reality, it is quite far from Italian standards but average for those on the island. The place has everything but is lacking, especially in terms of cleanliness. The rest is average; if you don't spend much time at the property, it's just fine.
