Playa Calera Suite

I booked this hotel some time ago and was dismayed with some of the more recent reviews. From my experience I can only say that this hotel was fantastic. The room was large and comfortable and being sea facing was light and bright all day. The bathroom was a good size however I agree with a previous reviewer that a bath tub is totally unhelpful to us seniors and indeed there was no extractor. Astoundingly comfortable huge bed. Breakfast was a good buffet with plenty of variety. You can have buffet dinner but we never tried it as there are a load of good and cheap restaurants nearby. The pool on the roof is a treat with plenty of loungers and umbrellas. Pool towels from the pool guy on production of your towel card. No smoking in the pool area - brilliant. There is no pool bar which makes me think that the hotel may be missing a trick. Nice and quiet and laid back. Aircon mentioned in previous reviews and we found it perfectly adequate and whisper quiet. Hotel staff were fantastic and couldn't do enough. We were even supplied with food parcels on our departure as we had an early ferry to catch. We thoroughly enjoyed our week and would recommend to anyone wanting a quiet La Gomera experience. One tip: Book a sea facing room unless you want your balcony to be facing some palms without much sun.

Although the hotel is generally good, there are several aspects that I cannot understand for a 4* hotel, especially being a relatively new hotel, apparently from 2015. 1. I do not understand why they install bathtubs; it is something I cannot wrap my head around in new hotels; I do not know if there are walk-in showers for people with reduced mobility or the elderly. In case there were any, they did not offer them. 2. I stayed from 05-09 Sep, and on the 7th, if I remember correctly, they left a note in our room stating that the pool and breakfast hours were being changed to half an hour earlier. The time before the change was 7pm for the pool and 10am for breakfast; with the change, it became 6:30pm and 9:30am respectively... something illogical knowing that it is still summer time (I would understand it for autumn-winter, but certainly not for summer). 3. We stayed with breakfast only, but for a 4* hotel, the buffet has little variety and is repetitive, with practically the same food every day. 4. The bathrooms do not have an exhaust fan for odors, just a vent.
