We recently stayed at Tonga Towers in a one-bedroom apartment, having picked the holiday up as a last-minute cancellation. Because of this, we managed to get it at a discounted rate; if I had paid anywhere near full price, I would have been very disappointed.
I am frankly baffled how this is considered a 4-star hotel; it feels much more like a 3-star. It’s a pleasant enough place, but quite a few things let it down. Ultimately, the intermittent sewerage smells in our room and the pool environment, which almost ruined the stay, are the main reasons we won't be returning.
The Room & Housekeeping
The layout of the one-bedroom apartment was just okay. The rooms are separated by a large wardrobe-style door, which meant there was zero soundproofing between the sections. The bed provided for the kids was a single sofa bed, which is really not ideal when you are looking for proper single beds to ensure everyone gets a good night's rest. The air conditioning was also barely effective, and, as mentioned, we experienced intermittent sewerage smells throughout our stay, which was a major negative.
Housekeeping was highly inconsistent. I don't expect to have to chase staff for basics like fresh towels or for the floor to be swept. To their credit, the reception staff were super efficient and pleasant (kudos to them for sorting the cleaning issues when raised), but it shouldn't have been necessary in the first place.
Food & Drink
Meal times can only be described as a scrum. The food overall is decent at best, but mostly boring and uninspiring. The breakfast has a good selection, and dinner offers plenty of choices, though it lacks excitement. Lunch, however, was restricted to the bare basics and felt very limited. The dining room operates with drinks brought to your table, which is a system I really don't like. On the plus side, the ice creams are branded.
If you want a drink at night, be prepared to wait a lifetime at the bar. We didn’t eat at the pool bar, so I can’t comment on that.
Pool & Atmosphere
The pool environment almost ruined the holiday for us. The absolute worst part was the sunbed wars. Queuing at 7:45 AM just to secure a sunbed is not my idea of fun in the sun. It’s a joke, and management desperately needs to sort it out. To top it off, an Italian man decided to aggressively take my sunbeds off me for no reason. I let him have them, as it obviously made him feel better about himself.
The pools are also probably too small for the sheer size of the hotel. This isn't necessarily the hotel's fault, but the pool experience was made far worse by grown men with absolutely zero self-awareness thinking it’s acceptable to aggressively throw multi-colored American footballs across the water. I had to challenge multiple grown adults about this behavior several times during our stay.
The Location
Finally, stepping out of the hotel, we found Can Picafort itself to be somewhat run down. Having stayed in Palmanova back in May, the contrast was noticeable, and it was a bit of a shame.
The Verdict
Great reception staff and okay food options, but the stressful pool environment (which nearly ruined the holiday), uninspiring meals, inconsistent housekeeping, and room smells completely overshadow the positives.

We had an absolutely fantastic holiday at Tonga Towers and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to other families. I travelled as a single mum with my 8-year-old and 6-year-old, and we all had an amazing time from start to finish.
The standout feature for my children was the kids' club. They absolutely loved it and looked forward to going every day. The team were brilliant with them, and on our final evening they put on an incredible show which included the children. Seeing my kids up on stage having so much fun was such a lovely way to end the holiday.
The swimming facilities were excellent and one of the best things about the hotel. Having a choice of four different pools meant there was always somewhere to swim, relax or play, and the water temperature was perfect. We never had any issues finding sun loungers either. We would usually arrive at the pool around 11am after a leisurely breakfast and could always find somewhere to sit.
Breakfast was one of our favourite parts of the day. The fresh pancakes made right in front of us were absolutely delicious and became part of our morning routine. The food throughout the holiday was very good, with lots of variety and some brilliant themed evenings. There was always something yummy to eat, and the Mexican night was definitely our favourite. The only slight negative was the dinner service when trying to order drinks, which could be quite slow at times. Aside from that, we were really happy with the food and dining experience.
I do wish the hotel served iced lattes as I really missed them during the week, but the virgin piña coladas more than made up for it. They were excellent, and the kids loved them too.
The hotel itself was spotlessly clean. Everywhere was very well maintained, from the communal areas to the restaurants and pool areas. Our room was cleaned to a very high standard every day and the beds were incredibly comfortable, making for a great night's sleep after busy days in the sun.
One of my favourite parts of the hotel was the adults-only rooftop area. It was the perfect place to relax and enjoy some peace and quiet while the children were happily occupied at the kids' club.
The local area was great too, with plenty of shops nearby. I also found a laundrette only five minutes away, which turned out to be a lifesaver. On our last day I took all of our washing there and returned home with fresh, clean laundry, making unpacking so much easier.
As the parent of a child with a nut allergy, I was naturally a little cautious about food. There could definitely be better food labelling, but we stuck to foods we knew were safe and asked staff whenever we were unsure. Thankfully, my son had no problems at all during our stay. Packaged ice lollies were available on request and were the safest option for him, as the same scoop is used across the different ice cream flavours.
The shower water is quite salty, which took a little getting used to, but the shower itself was lovely and I particularly liked the shampoo and conditioner provided. Pool towels are available to hire for €10, can be exchanged each morning by the pool, and the deposit is returned in cash at checkout.
Overall, we absolutely loved our stay at Tonga Towers. The combination of excellent pools, fantastic kids' club, comfortable rooms, great entertainment, lovely food and a clean, well-maintained hotel made for a wonderful family holiday. My children didn't want to leave, and neither did I. We made some fantastic memories and I will definitely be recommending this hotel to family and friends.

As someone who works for a UK international airline and stays in hotels all over the world, I can honestly say this is the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. The experience fell far below any reasonable standard of hospitality, and I would not consider staying here again or recommending it to others. It takes a lot for me to leave a poor review however unfortunately this hotel has gave me no choice especially after reading the email back from Joan Company with a very poor response.
My husband and I chose the Tonger Towers hotel to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary, a very special milestone for us. Upon arrival, the hotel congratulated us on our anniversary and advised that we could upgrade our room to help celebrate the occasion. However, we were charged an additional €75 for this upgrade. In reality, it did not feel like a celebration upgrade at all, but rather an opportunity to generate additional revenue for the hotel. There was no welcome card, no small gift, no complimentary drink, and no special touch to acknowledge such an important occasion. This left us feeling very disappointed. Given the complete lack of recognition after the upgrade was sold as a way to celebrate our anniversary, it inevitably made us question whether LGBT couples receive the same level of consideration as other guests.
We then discovered that the air conditioning in our room was not working. We reported this to your staff, and whilst it was attended to that evening, it still did not perform particularly well throughout our stay.
During our stay, we dined with our family, a group of 12 guests who had all booked a package holiday through Jet2. The restaurant experience was extremely disappointing. The dining area was overcrowded, with very little space between tables. Guests and staff were constantly brushing past, and items were knocked from our table due to the lack of room.
To make matters worse, the restaurant had completely run out of desserts by 8:00pm. We were simply told that “once it’s gone, it’s gone.” This occurred on 22 July, and I encouraged the hotel to investigate this with the catering team, as it was unacceptable for paying guests to find that key elements of the dining offering are unavailable so early in the evening. The hotel was simply not interested and Joan Company (the manager) did not show any interest towards this matter.
Finally, we decided to treat ourselves to a drink at the rooftop bar. We arrived at approximately 10:55pm and ordered drinks. However, as soon as we sat down, the lights were turned off and staff shouted “closed” across the area. This was an extremely poor customer experience and left us feeling unwelcome.
