El Sombrero Apartments

No frills straight forward apartments in Los Gigantes, Tenerife. Clean, comfortable basic accommodation. Great bolt hole for exploring Tenerife with everything you need on your doorstep. Love these apartments and the family who run them. Complex is well maintained and quiet with two pools (adult and child).

These apartments are just ok. I certainly wouldnt rave about them as some reviews have. They are definitely tired and in need of painting and fresh grouting. The doors dont shut and just look manky. But the apartments are huge! The kitchen has a toaster and kettle and full size fridge with large freezer. All these things very useful. No mugs so bring your own unless you like using tiny cups and saucers. The beds are super comfortable but pillows awful. I took my own pillow and pillow case and was glad I did. Some towels were clearly newer than others. I also took my own cheap towels. Shower was great and really powerful and lots of hot water. For ne the main issue is that they are situated right next to the main road that runs through Los Gigantes and if you are unlucky and your room overlooks this or is next to this road then im afraid to say you will not get much peace and quiet. So you will need ear plugs. Also there is no air con so you have no choice but to have the windows open. We were lucky as we were further back and in a top floor one bed apartment overlooking the pool. This was quieter but one day the cleaners decided to spend more than an hour cleaning the pool area and sunbeds and started at 7am. They did a great job but woke us up with quite a start. As mentioned there is no air con. They will let you rent a fan for €15. The temperature while we were there was nearly 40deg and 98% humidity. The fan did nothing other than blow hot air around and sounded like a factory in the room. The pool is ok. Fairly quiet most days and sunbeds available most days although people still put their towels out as early as 7.30am. Why? ? No pool bar but you can take drinks in plastic down there. Once again we were lucky as there were no kids there when we were there but I would imagine that it wouldnt take much for the pool area to be overtaken by a large group or family and then it would be hell. No WIFI unless you pay for it and it was expensive. Staff seem nice. Cleaners do a fabulous job and dont harass you to get into your apartment to clean it. You have a door tag that you can use to let them know when they can come in. And they're not in every day. There is large scale building work behind the apartments but it doesnt really bother you. You might hear a little bit of knocking but its not too bad. Los Gigantes is a small resort with a few bars some with entertainment and acts. They're all the same acts that just do a circuit. Some acts better than others. There are currently awful roadworks happening in the town which cuts right through the middle and you cannot cross the road but have to walk all the way round to get from one side of the road to another. It spoils it and would make it tricky to get around on a wheelchair or with push chairs. Los Gigantes wasnt for us. And by the end of 11 nights we were ready to come home. A couple of tips: Tipsy bar is great. Food lovely and you can spend €15 each for a sun bed and then this gives you €15 credit for food and drinks. Also entertainment was better here than the other bars. The kebab place in the square is halal..yuk! There is a tiny halal sign on the menu. The One More Bar ( previously bamboo bar) is really nice and they do a quiz night. This is the nicest looking bar in the town. Lovely walk all round the coast to Puerte de Santiago. And there are a couple of nice restaurants there. Don't bother with Route 66 bar as its not as good as it used to be. Most bars in Los Gigantes are just chavvy and tacky. Sorry to say we wont return to Los Gigantes.

Love this place. As mentioned, so convenient for everything. Bus stop, bars Marina literally just a few minutes walk from the appartments. New lidl is awesome and It has a bread slicer! No night clubs but saw some gr8 entertainers at the various bars. Irish pub there Highland Paddy is brill, staff are just sooo extra nice. Lots of expats but gives it a homely, safe friendly feel. The view from the balcony was amazing, huge in size, better than a 5 star hotel for privacy and location. ended up adopting a' Paloma Blanca', then latterly swallows who were swooping about. Yesterday heard cries of goats on the hill behind..,you get the gist, just beautiful and yes it is a bit old fashioned but I liked that. Staff are always on call, love Cuban Lotto. Antonio has worked there 4 twenty years, works every weekend, always patient and helpful. So If you like peace and quiet, convenience, views to die for, this place is the place. Oh and super safe as a lone female...
