Hotel Lowen

We were in Appenzell for a long weekend. The Hotel Löwen is centrally located in the small town, with nice rooms and a good breakfast. Parking is available in the large public parking lots or in the parking garage of the Hotel Säntis, which belongs to the same hotel chain. The hotel's own restaurant, or the numerous restaurants in the area, offer excellent local dishes. We spent a relaxing and beautiful weekend in Appenzell and would love to come back to Appenzell and the Löwen.

I have stayed 3 nights here and have enjoyed every bit of it. I stayed in a single room, it is compact but very decently sized for a solo traveller. It’s clean, comfortable and cosy. Though it’s already May, the temperature did drop to single-digit during my stay so I really appreciate that my room was still comfortably warm. There’s breakfast served 7-10am every morning; just light continental style but sufficient. The hotel is tastefully decorated and all the staff I met have been really lovely and polite. They may not be at the reception all the time but you may reach them via the phone at the counter and they will be over very shortly. Location is great too, barely 5mins walk from the train station and 7mins walk to the supermarket (COOP). I would recommend this hotel without any hesitation.

It just didn't become the full score and 4.8 out of 5 would be ideal. The house is in a prime location and really doesn't have to hide: we had a wonderful room which couldn't be cleaner, which was well in shot, quality equipped, as well as furnished. Bathroom top in size and comfort, breakfast rich with very fine local products, only the filling unfortunately did not work quite so expeditiously. What we found very, very unfortunate: there were practically no staff visible and we had the feeling at times that we were in a ghost house. Leave bar, leave reception (although immediately available by phone), leave restaurant (except for sporadic replenishment). The carpeted staircases of the hotel looked partly dirty, which did not fit the overall impression of the house, which presented itself up to the rooms in the decorative robe. Nevertheless and quite clearly: a really great three star hotel with a very clear recommendation.
