Hotel Astoria advertises itself as a 3-star hotel. Unfortunately, I can't confirm that. I spent a night at the hotel. When I walked into the room, I was slain by a terrible stench of smoke (despite no smoking) and something else. I opened the balcony door and ventilated until I left the room again. I hoped that one day ventilation would help. When I came back in the evening, the smell was as bad as when I first arrived. I ventilated again. I am not someone who likes to complain and finds conflict pleasant. Later I closed the balcony door again as it was cold. After 10 minutes, the stench was unbearable again, I developed headaches and became nauseous. A few minutes later, I decided to report the problem to reception, which I did. The man seemed stern, but at first listened, but immediately asked what to do. The hotel was supposedly fully booked. Finally, he said he could come to the room and get an impression. More than 10 minutes later, he only came upstairs. I had waited in the hallway as I could not stand the stench and did not want to ventilate it so that it experienced the full extent. He entered and at first pretended there was no problem. Then he asked what I meant to smell. I repeated what I had already explained below. In an unnerved tone, he kept asking, "What am I supposed to do? What do you want, what should I do?". He turned on the ventilation, which didn't work for me before. I ventilated again. He said I could leave the balcony door open overnight, it wasn't so cold anymore... (I won't leave a balcony door open, 1. Noise from the train station, cars, 2. from the neighboring rooms you could easily come across, as only partitions were set up).
Then he wanted me to know that the smell of smoke would come from outside and if I would smoke. I said I was a non-smoker. Then came the coronation: "Oh, of course you should have known. Then next time you come, call ahead and then we'll make sure it doesn't smell like smoke to keep you happy." I was just speechless... It is absolutely normal or at least it should be that a room does not smell so disgusting. I was just calm and down. He asked quite aggressively how the matter was done for me, the standard bribe offer "coffee, tea" came naturally also. He then brought a device that was supposed to remove the stench and leave a pleasant smell. The stench actually became much weaker with ventilation, the appliance and the ventilation. However, the device did not pull him out, but only whitewashed him with a mixture of vacuum cleaner air and menthol. The man then called my room phone later and asked what the situation was. Suddenly, he no longer seemed so unnerved and passive-aggressive but almost a little friendly. I said it was a little better, which it was at that moment. He said he had registered me for breakfast the next day (on the house). The night was terrible. The stench took over within an hour. I had a headache all night and I felt sick, maybe dozing from 4am onwards an hour before exhaustion. I couldn't really fall asleep. I could barely breathe. At 5.30 o'clock I finished the night and since then I have ripped the balcony door wide open again. I used to just sit on the edge of the bed with my head out the door. At some point I wanted to at least have a look at breakfast. It was in a pub next door. The choice was measly. There were baked-on croissants, small sample tins with Nutella and jam and mini baked-on rolls. To call this breakfast buffet is really pathetic and the whole thing for the special price of 18 Swiss francs. When I booked, I didn't have the best impression, but the other hotels in the same price range didn't look any better and I hoped for safety with 3-stars. I honestly don't understand all the positive comments. It is clear that not everyone has such a bad experience or bad room. These praises to the buffet and how beautiful and new everything was, is a lie. Everything was terribly old and worn out. My shower was disgusting, there was mold in the bathroom and the walls were torn down. I'm adding pictures. All this for the spot price of 112 euros for one night. I've been around the world a lot, staying in a variety of hotels and other accommodations and that was clearly the second worst experience for me! A hotel in Switzerland should not look like this and should not be allowed to wear stars! Even if I had received the stay as a gift, it would still have been an imposition. The fact that I had to pay for it and not so little is simply a reflection of this society and world again. A true witness of poverty! NO RECOMMENDATION!

Hotel looks very tired. We were put on first floor facing very busy street. Air con was not working. Night staff gave us a fan but needed windows had to be opened as it was too hot. Lots of noise and bright lights made sleeping difficult. Reception staff were very rude next day when we complained. They claimed it was law that they couldn’t use air conditioning. Yet every other hotel and shop was using air con freely… the receptionist’s hands were shaking and his voice raised as he made the law claim. It’s clear now and from other reviews that the hotel is simply trying to save money & increase profits by not using the air conditioning. It was too hot end-May/June so a proper Summer stay will be unbearable. The bathroom is tiny with very old fashioned facilities. Glad to be home!

The structure is old to let go. At the entrance, it already looks ugly and not at all inviting. I made the ceck-in and went upstairs to the room. The room small and all the way and in the room an unpleasant smell. The room not pleasant and the bathroom very small. Once we saw the room we went out and looked for another hotel. Once we find it we bark fat the ceck-out. The receptionist was disappointed but unfortunately could not do anything, because it was not his fault.Pity that we had already paid in advance and was not refundable (after I understood why)
