Crown Hotel

This is an older hotel. Room was clean but clearly outdated. The walls are cardboard and we could hear everything in the hallways. Staff was friendly and helpful. For some reason they do not let you leave the hotel with the key. You need to turn it over to the front desk when you at ask for it when you come back. It's it a great location however and a great place if you just need a cheap place to sleep.

It is rather old building and it is pretty dirty place. Room, was old style and bathroom definitely was not nice. There was no room service during 2 day long stay. But the staff was nice and kind, and beds were quite comfortable. Also location is convenient. Even with a discount it was quite expensive for the value, but both hotels and hostels are expensive in Taichung and Crown Hotel was below the average.

Honestly this place is cheap and in terms of the shabby decor it's about what you'd expect for the price. But I was surprised at how unhelpful the staff were. I stayed for one night with a friend during a motorbike trip around Taiwan. I can understand that a hotel would have a no-guest policy. But when two friends of ours met us in the lobby (we were heading out to get some dinner together) the hotel would not even allow them to our room for five minutes to use the bathroom. On the day we checked out we left our bags in their bag storage room for a few hours while we explored the city, and when we came back mid-afternoon the staff also refused to allow us use of any bathroom and suggested we walk to the station and try there. They also had surprisingly little idea about the area around the hotel. When we asked the lady at the counter for a place we could walk to get some breakfast, she recommended a food street that was "five minutes walk away". It ended up being more than half an hour away. It bothered me because these things are so easy to provide. Zero discretionary effort, they must genuinely not give a stuff about their customers.
