Mystery 13 B&B

It was our first time in Yilan and we stayed at Mystery B&B for two nights. The hosts were very kind and friendly! Before the trip, i contacted Vernnica via whatsapp and her responses were quick and answered all my queries. During the trip I would also message Vernnica to ask for information about the local transport and places. It was great knowing that help was just a message away. The location of the B&B was ideal and convenient. From the bus and train stations, it took 10 minutes by taxi or 20-25 minutes by a free shuttle bus (2 mins walk from the B&B). The entire place was clean and decorated with a homely feel - the hosts gave us a complimentary room upgrade and the room was superb with a bathtub and a patio area. Scenery was nice and it was really peaceful and comfortable, away from the busyness of the city. Every morning, wonderful breakfasts were prepared for us and we had great conversations with the hosts. They shared with us their knowledge abut Yilan and recommended great locations and activities for us to visit and do. Will definitely recommend this place!

My friend and I booked this place mid May and were we glad we made a good choice! Reservation process was pretty seamless - I dropped an email (as published on the website), and subsequently corresponded with the host (Vernnica) via WhatsApp. We arrived late into the evening, underestimating the bus travel time from Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport to Luodong Bus Station (2.5 hours). As it was raining and dark, it was hard to figure out our surroundings. Thankfully, the taxi driver from Luodong Bus Station suggested waiting for us to check-in and take us to the night market (without running the meter while waiting - love the hospitality of the Taiwanese I’ve met over multiple trips before). Vernnica was really nice. Knowing that we were hungry and tired from the journey, she quickly walked us through what amenities that we could utilise on the ground floor, and brought us to our rooms on the 3rd floor. Do note if your luggage is too large or heavy though, as the stairway is a little narrow. Our room - Olivia - was really comfortable. With both our luggages opened out wide on the floor, we still had room to walk around. The room was also clean and well-maintained. Simple amenities were also provided in the room - toothbrushes, razor, tea bags etc. And the breakfast which was accompanied in the room rate was awesome on both mornings!. The fruits and vegetables were fresh and sweet - even the cooked vegetables tasted so good with little seasoning. The 1st morning we had a Taiwanese-styled breakfast with sweet potato porridge and some side dishes. Definitely not forgetting a simple egg dish with the Sanxing spring onions which the host grows in her home (they don’t stay in the B&B). The 2nd morning it was thick French toast with meat patty and sausage. I’m not sure if travelling just makes everything taste better, but I didn’t need any jam or honey with the toast - just yummy on its own! You could make your own coffee or tea that they have. Snacks are also available if you are hungry at night. I had previously corresponded with Vernnica to arrange for a private taxi tour for my friend and I. It went really well, and we covered more than what we had intended of the Yilan county. She also asked for our feedback so that she could get the same driver for her future guests. We had many conversations with Vernnica throughout our stay - a really hardworking lady who puts much thought into running her B&B (she has 2 other properties in the area to cater to larger groups). She shared with us where to find really good food in the Yilan county area - so much recommendations but our stomach space wasn’t enough. But I’m glad she told us to try Sanxing spring onions and Cherry Duck (it’s a specialty of Yilan County where the flesh is cherry pink) which we found at Luodong Night Market - highly recommended! We also found after that there’s a free local shuttle that runs from the bus stop near the B&B to Luodong Night Market, Luodong Bus Station and some other sites in the area. Do check the schedule that Vernnica has pinned on the fridge on the ground floor. All in all, we had a lovely stay at Mystery13 B&B and thanks to our lovely host, we learnt so much about Yilan county!

This was the best BnB we ever stayed at!! We booked the Bali style room, which was spacious, romantic, and bright! It features Bali style design/decoration with a semi outdoor shower/bathtub and a balcony with an incredible view of the rice paddy. We were able to take a bath in the large tub at night while listening to the sound of crickets. The host Vernnica allowed us to postpone the check-in date even though the room rate was non refundable via expedia. When the host found out that I couldn’t change the date via Expedia in the US, she contacted the one in Taiwan and took care of it for us. It was much appreciated as we had a family scheduling conflict. The building itself only had 4 rooms (they also have 2 other buildings nearby cater to large groups, please check their website). We were given the Bali room on the 3rd floor. It was so quiet at night that we did not hear the guests from the other room (they had a family), so it felt like we were the only people there. Please note that the room does not have a mini fridge but we were able to store our stuff in the kitchen fridge. The housekeeper (Ms. Sauan) made us delicious breakfast every morning. She was very friendly and helpful with local attractions and tips. We also learned about the bnb’s history and the history of Taiwan. There is a reason why this BnB ranks #1 on TA. Definitely choose this location for your future stay in Luodong/Yilan.
