I loved everything about this resort. We stayed here one night in the middle of April as part of a self-driving car trip we were taking around the Mae Hong Son loop. When we pulled up, someone came out to our car to meet us and help us with our bags. Our room was a cute little casita. The grounds are lush and beautiful. It is not hard to find, but just enough outside of town to feel a little more rural. We went into town for dinner, so I can't comment on the restaurant, but our breakfast, which was included, was lovely. We snuck into the pool quietly after hours and had a quiet little swim. All in all, really lovely.

Our stay at Fern Resort had two distinct sides. The setting is truly beautiful. Although the rice fields had just been cleared, the view was still nothing short of stunning. The cottage was okay by Asian standards, but certainly no more than that. Unfortunately it lacked maintenance: the hooks to hang towels were gone, as was the stopper in the sink. The toilet seat was rough, peeled and had an unattractive brown-yellow color. In addition, there were broken screens and there were stains on the cushions of the chairs. The mattresses were also quite Spartan hard. We understand from other guests that some cottages have been renovated or that new ones have been added. At least our cottage was not included. The food was fine and the staff generally super friendly and helpful. One exception was the gentleman at the egg station during breakfast: if you open 15 minutes later than indicated and promise to bring the fried eggs, keep that promise. According to stories and photos, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have even been here three times in their happy days. We'll stick with this one. In short: a beautiful location with great food and friendly staff, but the condition of (at least our) cottage clearly left something to be desired. With some more maintenance this stay could be really top.
