We were staying overnight for a friend's nearby 60th, checked in late afternoon, delighted to see the room had aircon - although that sadly proved to be premature, as it was about effective as leaving the fridge door open (the empty room fridge, not a mini bar, that was actually warmer than the room) - there was a small balcony, with a scenic view of the carpark. The next morning would be a Sat, so breakfast ran 8 - 10.30am and as check-out is 11am, I asked at reception if it would be possible to have an extra 30mins late check-out, until 11.30am so that we didn't have to get up too early or rush through our breakfast and do you know what the response was : Yes for a £10 charge ! This is on an almost £200 room with a view of the car park, with pathetically inadequate aircon, that repeatedly turned itself off throughout the night, during a July heatwave. Oh and there's no telephone in the room to report it, as it had been removed in line with their "drive towards sustainability" so that you can only contact staff by using a QR code or dialling a special number on your mobile - good job everyone has one I suppose.

The location is A1. The rooms a bit tired but OK. The service V poor in every respect. No table service in the garden. Can't book restaurants at reception. Everything's online or forget it. Call me old fashioned but what happened in the hotel trade.

Just spent two nights at the Compleat Angler, a hotel we have visited on many occasions over three decades. In the past it was always a special place to come. But during the last few years we have noticed a drop in standards. Upkeep and cleanliness of the facilities have suffered, as has the training, efficiency and friendliness of the staff. What a pity that the present management is unable or unwilling to respect and maintain a tradition.
