The Earl Of Derby

I stayed at the Earl of Derby in Cambridge on 17 September and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. The bed was extremely uncomfortable, as two beds had been pushed together leaving a significant ridge and gap in the middle. There were also visible slashes and damage to the divan sections of the bed, which added to the overall impression that the room was not being maintained to an acceptable standard. This made it very difficult to sleep properly. There was also visible mould in the bathroom, which I found particularly concerning from a cleanliness and hygiene perspective. I was given no basic information about my stay either – nothing about the Wi-Fi, food, breakfast times or checkout arrangements. The atmosphere created by some of the staff was also uncomfortable. Several staff members were sitting outside drinking and smoking, which made me feel more like I was intruding in someone’s private space than staying at a pub with guest accommodation. I contacted the pub directly after my stay to explain my concerns and requested a partial refund, which I felt was a fair resolution given the issues I had experienced. Unfortunately, this was declined. The refusal to offer any form of compensation, despite the issues I raised, was particularly disappointing and turned what was already a poor stay into an even more disappointing customer service experience. Overall, the combination of an uncomfortable and damaged bed, mould in the bathroom, lack of basic guest information and an unwelcoming atmosphere made for a very poor experience. I would not stay here again.

We've been here a couple of times and really like it's honesty and good value. It's like a good local used to be...warm and comfortable with good beer, simple tasty food, generous portions and affordable prices! They've always made us and our dog feel very welcome. It isn't one of the many over priced gastro-pubs (thank gawd)...it's a real, independent local pub and we'll definitely go again.

Me and my husband went for breakfast this morning on 15 February, we ordered a full English breakfast, and I had a bacon egg sandwich,all I could hear was the microwaves pinging in the background. They brought out my bacon, egg sandwich and the bacon was so hard. The eggs were so overcooked. I ate a little bit and I’ve just left the rest. My husband ordered a full cooked breakfast and everything was like mine hard bacon the only thing that was on the menu, which was freshwas the bread it cost us 17 pound. I did tell the lady who cooked the breakfast and she just replied. She thought the bacon wasn’t very good. We left the premises. I never go back. It was absolutely disgusting.
