Pier House Hotel

Difficult review to write as this is the 2nd time we have stayed at the Pier House Hotel both times booking rooms with views. On our latest occasion the trip was a treat for our parents 60th wedding anniversary and we booked them room 2, we had room 11. The staff were great really friendly and helpful from start to finish and views and rooms were exceptional. Now this is where things took a turn, unfortunately the electric went down on the Saturday night at the time we were in the restaurant and were sat waiting to order. Although it wasn't the hotels fault and they provided candles for people already eating we were left in the dark until the lights came back on approx 30 mins later. A complimentary offer of a drink would have been nice whilst waiting but nothing was forth coming and we were just left sitting. After the meal we retired to our rooms and this is when it went downhill as the noise from the bar directly below our room (11) was so loud we literally couldn't hear the TV. Now I love a good party but this went on until 11pm when they started to kick out and thats when the fun started! The customers hung around outside shouting and screaming for a further 10mins and then predictably a mass brawl broke out. This went on directly outside our window whilst "Freddy" and some other members of the St Awful (what locals call St Austel) massive practised their pugilist skills on the road outside. "Helen" and her screeching friends did do their best to stop "Freddy" but he was a determined chap and a further 20mins later they were still scrapping and screaming whilst moving up the road. Just after 11.30pm the staff of the bar pulled the shutters down and stood outside loudly congratulating themselves on a great night and we thankfully had a bit of peace at about midnight. Unfortunately at 5:55am a delivery arrived just below our window waking us up, which as it happened was a godsend as the hotels fire alarm went off at 7am so we were thankfully awake for it! Unfortunately my 80 year old parents weren't and after rushing to make sure they were ok and hadnt had heart attacks we made our way down the stairs to the bar only to be told it was a false alarm. Worryingly nobody met us at the stairs and there was no sign of a "fire marshal" to advise the worried customers, perhaps a review of the fire evacuation procedure is required? We eventually decided to have breakfast and vacate the hotel and thats when our parents (room2) advised they also had a issue with noise as the room above had flooring that was paper thin and they were kept awake most of the night by people moving around until the early hours. Such a shame as the staff, views, restaurant and rooms were 5* but the experience we had on the Saturday really ruined the trip. For this reason I gave a 3* review but will not be using the hotel again which is such a shame as I appreciate some of the issues were circumstances out of the hotels control.

We had dinner in the dog friendly area as we were travelling with our 2 dogs in the area. The food and service were amazing the burger is one of the nicest I have had in a restaurant for a long time, Rob was our server and he was friendly and very helpful with choices of local food dishes. My husband had the catch of the day and said this was delicious. We will definitely return if in the area again.

I recently visited this hotel for the first time a drink and meal with friends. The hotel is very comfortable and nicely decorated in a great location. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming. The Mediterranean Bowl I had was excellent and very flavoursome. I would highly recommend the Pier House Hotel and will be returning.
