Visited for 3 nights, as a family of 3. Hotel is in a lovely quiet location with an easy short commute to Keswick.
The room we had was disappointing. There was no view - it looked directly onto the staff accommodation barn. This was annoying on Friday evening when staff were sat outside until late and chatting could be heard until 11pm. Not great when trying to get a child to sleep. The ensuite bathroom was refurbished, however the quality of finish was poor with chipped tiles having been grouted in and the bathroom door didn't even shut never mind lock because the lock had been fitted so poorly.
Being an old hotel the floors all sloped, including the bedroom floor. We didn't sleep well at all, not sure if this was due to the bed itself or the fact it was on a slope!
Housekeeping was a lottery - one day the whole room including bathroom was made up, the next day only the room was and the bathroom had been missed with towels put out for washing still left in situ in the bath.
The pool was okay, a paint touch up to the walls would be worthwhile.
The best part of our stay was the restaurant. Evening menu choice was good and the food sublime, reasonable priced and portion size was good.
I would certainly visit the restaurant again, but probably stay elsewhere.

The castle inn is an amazing friendly hotel. The room was clean and regular check by housekeeping. The location was great with regular bus to towns around. The staff were very welcoming and very helpful and always willing to help. The whole holiday was well worth the money and we had no complaints it was really quiet and calming atmosphere .good value for money. The amenities were really good swimming pool, sauna, steam room, and jacuzzi all excellent. We used the spa as well which was worth every penny we were able to book on the day we wanted and the ladies were really good at their jobs we both felt well looked after. The food was cooked really well but could have done with more choice on the evening meal meal

We stayed at the Castle Inn Hotel and Spa from Friday 17th July to Sunday 19th July 2026.
We don’t normally complain, but in this instance we feel it is entirely justified, and it appears many other guests do have similar views to us.
Our room wasn’t ready when we arrived, so Reception said to have a drink, and they would come and get us when it was ready - they didn’t. There were many things that Reception staff could have been busying themselves doing, but there just didn't seem any urgency or desire to do so.
All the tables in the beer garden were dirty, with glasses and rubbish everywhere. A waiter did finally come out to tidy up, but his behaviour and comments were very unprofessional.
The unisex toilets in the reception area are dated, messy and not clean. There was a dirty piece of toilet paper on the floor in between the toilet, reception and dining room that was literally there for hours – we watched many staff members step over it. What impression is this setting!
Unbelievably there was a tampon and it’s tube on the floor as the car park enters the beer garden, we watched again as many staff members ignored it and stepped over it – disgusting!
When we got into our room, there was a sign that had fallen off the wall in our bathroom, it was down the side of the toilet and looked to have been there a while as it was filthy, clearly showing the floor by the toilet is never cleaned.
There was no air conditioning in the room, and despite the ongoing heat waves this summer the fan was cheap, old and very noisy. We would have expected a fridge in a 4 Star hotel but disappointingly there was not one.
The pool was very tired. The changing rooms were dirty and smelled like wet dog. When we arrived there was talc all over one of the benches, it was still there when we left. The floors were wet through, I didn’t see one member of staff cleaning the changing rooms on either day we used them. Reception also didn’t tell us we need £1 for the lockers.
The situation with towels at the hotel was actually unbelievable! There were no towels available at Reception for the pool. We were told to go back up to our room and bring down towels from there! When we returned to Reception later, to replace the towels so we could shower before dinner, we were told they still didn’t have any. We asked numerous times in the afternoon - but still no towels. We could not have a shower before dinner which is just not acceptable! The receptionist actually fetched a pile of towels into the Restaurant at 7:50pm, when we were eating! When I told her I could do little with them at that moment, she suggested she put them on the floor outside our room! Not wanting our towels to be sat on a dirty un-hoovered carpet, I frustratingly had to leave my dinner to put them in our room - as apparently as 4 Star hotel does not have bedroom keys! No apology for the whole fiasco, and complete obliviousness to this unacceptable situation.
The service in the Restaurant was very poor. I ordered a lemonade with no ice, it was put on the table next to us and sat there for at least 2 or 3 minutes, when the lady at that table said it was not theirs the waitress dumped it on our table with no explanation or apology, it also had ice in. I had to tell her to replace it – we would have expected her to have done that instinctively. We were asked if we wanted desert and coffee before we had even had our main course. The service was slow. We were charged for our food when we were on Dinner, Bed and Breakfast. The floor was in desperate need of hoovering and dogs were not segregated away from people who don’t want to eat next to them! I will give credit where it is due, the food was very good.
On checkout the Receptionists tried to charge us £290 when we had already paid, then £34.85 for drinks we had already paid for!
In conclusion, a vast, dated, overpriced, unclean hotel, desperately in need of modernisation and renovation. Hugely understaffed and the staff that are there are inexperienced, unprofessional and unsuitable. We paid £538.00 for this 2 day stay. We will not be recommending your hotel to anyone, in fact quite the opposite we are telling people to save their money and avoid at all costs!
