BEST WESTERN LEE WOOD HOTEL

This is a really lovely hotel with a great location, within walking distance of central Buxton and especially convenient to the Opera House (great if you're going to a show there) and the Pavilion Gardens. Really beautiful and comfortable room, tasty breakfast with lots of options, friendly and helpful staff, all at an affordable price. The only reason why I am not giving it 5 stars is the lack of air conditioning in the midst of a heatwave!! (But it is an old building and it would take a lot of work to install it, and the room temperature was OK with the windows open once night came on.) Apart from that though, a really nice stay and I would be very happy to stay another time! Many thanks.

This was our first stay here, and there are plenty of positives, but with a major negative that dragged our rating down somewhat. Starting with the positives, the location and hotel surrounds are lovely, with it facing a cricket pitch and with well maintained gardens surrounding the hotel. The hotel is clean on the whole, especially the rooms, with a lift making upper rooms very accessible. The service is excellent and friendly. Onto the negative - breakfast. We had breakfast included during our stay which was a bit of a disaster. The cooked breakfasts were mostly poor - with the muffins very small and cheap tasting. The cooked English breakfast came out looking very sad on the plate and tasted very bland and poor, with the bacon tasting as though it had been boiled rather than fried and the scrambled eggs cold and slightly undercooked. You didn’t feel like you wanted to finish any of the breakfasts on each day as they simply were not good enough. The cold selection was OK - the croissants and yoghurts being the highlight, but again it felt very basic. So overall the hotel is nice, but based on this experience we recommend avoiding the breakfast.

Excellent is the only way to describe it! It is a traditional hotel but definitely not stuffy. It has an excellent position just 5 minutes walk from the Opera House and St John's Church - very handy if you go to Buxton for the Gilbert & Sullivan Festival as we did. Our three nights there were wonderful. The staff were amazing and nothing was too much trouble for them. We witnessed a few elderly or frail/disabled visitors being helped with their luggage and with getting their food at meal times. We were particularly impressed by the two blonde older waitresses serving supper. The meals ( breakfast and supper) were excellent. There was a very wide choice of breakfast items from the buffet, many of them healthy like yoghurt, fruit salad, prunes but also some naughty like croissants. Their cooked menu was also very strong from full English (though you could choose which items to have,) to various delicious breakfast baps like smoked salmon, avocado, eggs etc. The supper was also excellent . Always a good selection for begetarians. But usually consisted of soup, fish, traditional meat dish, and something vaguely exotic like a curry or stroganoff etc. I think they do the traditional meat dishes best. My Sunday roast beef with all the trimmings and my pork in white mustard sauce were both devine. The puddings are good too and I can recommend the cheese board. The room we had was large with an actual bath! It looked out over the cricket pitch and bowling green. As the property is an older one it has character and our room had somewhat wonky/sloping floors. There is a lift to all the floors in the hotel and it was never busy. There is also a bar with reasonably priced drinks opening out into a spacious lounge. The restaurant opens out onto a large patio where you can sit and enjoy the peacefulness of the location. Perhaps I ought to mention the hotel is up a hill but not too steep so thos with limited mobility might find it difficult though the hotel does have mobility access via a gentle ramp. Would we go there again? YES, YES YES!
