I was very disappointed with this hotel. Travelling with dogs often means paying extra for subpar rooms, but being greeted by the unmistakable smell of stale urine upon entering was a new low. The carpet was covered in stains, the skirting boards were filthy, and the wallpaper was bubbling off the walls. Even with the windows open and a fan running, the room was stiflingly hot. The bathroom had a cracked sink, mould in the shower and most disconcertingly no privacy glass. The so-called "view" turned out to be overlooking a shabby courtyard.
The bed itself was fortunately clean and comfortable, but sleep was difficult, partly due to the relentless heat and partly because the door didn't fit properly, letting bright hallway light seep directly towards the bed.
The corridor leading to the rooms had its own odd smell, stained carpets, and a very dilapidated feel. It felt more like a service wing than part of the main hotel. The mismatch of cheap modern fittings and poor decorating standards in such a lovely, historical building only added to the unkempt vibe.
The location is quite lovely and very convenient for walking, worth noting the track down to the hotel itself is heavily rutted and bumpy, but then most roads are these days!
The website advertised a "free breakfast", however on arrival it turned out breakfast was not included. I decided against paying anything extra to the already overpriced room rate, so I can't comment on the food.
Honestly, this hotel would still feel like poor value at half the price. Based on this experience, it's not somewhere I could ever recommend.

Quite rundown. I do not expect the same modern furnishings in England as I do elsewhere in Europe. However, everything here is old, very old. From the carpets in the dining room and room to the sanitary facilities. The bathroom is one of the most dreadful I have ever experienced. Silicone seals that were already old ten years ago, and yes, wood in the bathroom does not get better over the years. We probably have the oldest and worst room. The view into the ancient courtyard, well, not great. Service is okay, friendliness is good. We advise against this hotel.

A lovely peaceful hotel in the Devon countryside. Large bright bedrooms and huge beds. Lots of choice for breakfast and friendly helpful staff.
