Mercure Southgate

Modern city centre Accor chain hotel, but not the reliable experience one should expect. Decor tatty, air con out of order during a heatwave, lift not working, poor attention to important design details. The hotel clearly needs a refurb, lots of scuffing in public areas, tired and rather grubby rooms (I was in a “privilege” room). Examples, and there are more, see pics; the built in wardroom contains a fridge (great, a little heater, mmm) and the ironing board and robes; ok, but where do I hang up my suit? You’ve rendered the space unusable. Air con out of order (they obviously knew when I booked, didn't notify) means windows open, but curtains are half off the rail… so blowing about and no black out… Coffee capsule machine is welcome, plenty of capsules, but who knows what the colours mean? No little card telling me where to get my caffeine… Location is good, although I can never find it, that’s my fault!

Have stayed here before. Great location, just a few minutes walk from city centre. Parking onsite. They're refurbishing the Rooms, so was given an upgraded room on the 3rd floor. Room 353, views of Cathedral. Considering the room had been renovated, there were still issues. Safe was broken, Bathroom gel dispenser had broken away from the wall, torn Bed base side. They've put new flooring and changed some furniture, but that's it. Plus, it was an adjoining room, so you could hear 'everything' from next door. Tried to change rooms, to no avail. Plus, £16 for car park, which I didn't pay the last few times. £153 paid for 1 night room only, which is really high. Usually only paid £80. So, average Hotel with Pool. Staff were ok, nothing special. Go for the Premier Inn up the road.
