Fox & Hounds Country Hotel

We 2 girls are both in our seventies - we checked in which went ok but the young man behind the desk did not offer to even ask if we could manage the stairs with our luggage. I liked my 'cosy' room but my friend thought hers was tired and her bed was extremely low to say the least. The Heywood restaurant is not as fine dining as the website and prices suggest. It's really just part of the bar area. If you don't like dogs do not come here as they are everywhere as the stains on the carpet in the restaurant bear witness. My friend thought the place smelt'doggy' (we are both dog owners and lovers though did not bring them on this occasion). To be fair I did not pick up that smell. Breakfast was peculiar - self service with people wandering around - limited hot choice - what we had was ok but the whole setup seemed unprofessional with dogs all over the place. Tea was served to your table, but you had to get yourself coffee......There was very little information about local attractions or places to visit. The garden looked really lovely. Overall we were glad not to have paid the full price - got a deal on Secret Escapes - it would be a nice touch if on checkout we were asked if we had enjoyed our 2 night stay -sadly would not return.

My partner and I stayed at the Fox and Hounds Country Hotel for 3 nights and had a wonderful time. Despite being in a very remote, very rural area, we were surprised to learn that there was a local railway station less than a 5 minute walk away which meant we could explore local villages and restaurants with ease. We dined in their restaurant on the last night and had a lovely meal which started with a couple of the chef’s own deliciously crafted amuse bouche and was followed by exquisitely prepared dishes. Our room was very comfortable and private with all the amenities we needed being topped up daily. We travelled with our very energetic Vizsla and were delighted to find that the hotel boasts extensive grounds which was really convenient. Our utter highlight, however, was the staff. It is not an exaggeration to say that we were treated like family from the warm and genuine conversation to their recommendations of local restaurants and places to visit. A particular shout out goes to Nellie and Aaron for the enjoyable conversations, and to the delightful owner, Matthew, whose dog was an instant hit with our boy! Thank you all for making our stay so uniquely fabulous. We can truthfully say that we have never stayed somewhere so warm and friendly, and we are already excited about coming back!

I went with Crediton and district lions for a cream tea. Scones were freshly cooked and warm. The staff and service was excellent. Thank you very much
