Second visit in two nights but this time to dine, we were not disappointed. Friendly efficient staff only too pleased to help, good whisky selection and absolutely amazing food. Best smoked salmon in a long time to start followed by tender steak and frites as well as poached salmon with a delectable sauce andcto finish a lovely Grand Marnier posset. Will definitely be back.

We have been going to this hotel for a meal for 20+ years, every time we visit Moffat which is a favourite stopover in our van . We love the atmosphere in the downstairs lounge which is dog friendly. The food was always excellent. We booked as usual for Sunday lunch. I don't know what's happened but there's new staff in corporate uniform and a manager type who was issuing orders. People dropping in were being turned away even though there were plenty of tables. People with lunch bookings were all directed upstairs to the souless restaurant area. When we left at 2pm there was nobody left in the lounge. Normally, it would be full The food? It was completely unremarkable. We won't be back. Fortunately, there's plenty of other excellent places to eat and drink in Moffat.

We've used The Star several times before, staff are always friendly and welcoming. This time we ate in the upstairs restaurant which looks great after a refurbishment. Service was excellent for both drinks and food. The starters and desserts were very good, unfortunately the Haddock and chips main was not. The fish was dry (frozen?) and the batter far too heavy. We like this place and the people who work there so we'll definitely be back, but perhaps not for the fish.
