Premier Inn Durham City Centre

Stopped for a night away for my husbands birthday. The room was clean and the bed was soooo comfy. Easy to check in. Parking (small fee) but next to hotel. Booked for breakfast next morning. Fantastic choice and it was very nice. We had 2 full English, tea, orange juice but could have had cereal, fruit, muffins, toast etc. choice was amazing. Staff were excellent. All very accommodating and always making sure everything was okay. 10/10

Visited Durham Walkergate at the begining of October. The hotel location is great for sightseeing - close to the city centre, University colleges, the cathedral and Castle. Premier Inn have always been our hotel chain of choice. We still found the same comfortable rooms, bed and fair value for money. Double glazing kept the room isolated from external noises though the room was very hot - even in October and the internal A/C was not operational. However there were disappointing signs of cost cutting since our last stay. When we arrived shortly before 3 there ws already a longish queue waiting to check in at 'exactly' 3 o clock and they had been directed by the hotel staff member on duty to the automated check in machines. Unfortunately only one of the 2 machines was working so the process was slow. The one working machine had a staff member alongside it showing customers how to use it (some customers did not have English as a first language). Even with the help of a staff member the machine would not dispense two room keys as requested so we made do with one - not a particular problem. We also found that rooms are no longer routinely serviced daily as they used to be. We were told we could ask staff members for replacements for damp bath towels, and /or request daily servicing but staff members on the bar in evenings or serving breakfast all seemed very busy. Breakfast was acceptable though clearly items were 'bulk cooked' and on each of the 3 mornings there were several items 'missing' from the self-service buffet, so it was a challenge to get a 'full english'. In total - the stay was OK but much less welcoming and convenient than previous stays. Although we will probably use Premier Inns again we'll also be looking to see whether there are other options avaialble.
