Seafield House

The leaking waste plumbing on the bathroom basin in room 12 needed attention. Probably something to do with the green glass bowl being mounted literally on a piece of kitchen worktop. Probably worth management checking basins and toilet seals in all rooms. The wifi speed is from the stone age, not even dial up, see photo. But we were able to see the funny side. Condition of Fire escape a real eye opener, see photo. But dont close this guest house. In so many ways it met all of our expectations. From our top floor room we could just see over the rooftops to get a glimpse of the sea.

To put things into context, we have written almost 900 reviews on this site, of which several hundred for hotels. This is one of only a handful we have given such a low rating. The GH kindly acceded to our request for a ground floor room (although I suspect we lost the "Large Double" we booked as a consequence. The location, with a wide range of bars, restaurants, cafés and shops close by, and the sea a short walk away. The room and bathroom were clean, but were both among the smallest we have encountered, almost in line with the French budget "modular" places, but at over twice the cost. Definitely not comfortable for 2 people to spend time in, just one chair, one bedside lamp, although plenty of storage. Bathroom miniscule, literally just room for shower and toilet. Lack of or conflicting information, not helped by a lack of website, for example: no breakfast (although mentioned on TA and Google), no parking (and reception lady unable to provide any info on payment hours for the few pay spaces on the street). Lost its third "star" when there was no hot water in the morning and we would have to wait at least 30 mins for the boiler to heat up again (no real apology offered). Why stay in a guest house rather than a hotel? For personal service, local advice, and perhaps a home cooked breakfast? Not here unfortunately : we just got the impression that the proprietors are only interested in renting rooms with minimum effort and taking the cash. Noticeably, there are no responses to the poor reviews on TA.

I don't have high standards in hotels and usually stay in the likes of Travelodge or Premium inn. I stayed at Seafield House and I was shocked. The listings state Free Parking and Bathtubs - Both of these are in correct. There is no parking whatsoever and you have to pay to stay in a public car park, and there aren't bath tubs. The state of the bathroom is something else, just look at my photos. The staining of the shower tray was long term, not just a couple of bad cleans, so was the mouldy sealant. The hand rail was rusty, the shower controls broken, the shower head clogged up, the shower didn't drain so you couldn't have a shower for more than 3 minutes and the toiletries empty. After a shower, you like to use a towel, my photos shows the 'clean' towel that was provided, I'm not even sure what the stain is. There was one window to the bathroom, and one to the bedroom. The bathroom one had a broken handle so it wouldn't lock, whereas the bedroom window handle couldn't be moved. The window was in a semi open state which moved the window in the winds - it made for an uncomfortable nights sleep. Even the curtains were filthy and broken. The coffee shelf was so out of level, I was scared to have a coffee in case the whole thing came down. In terms of safety, just look at the fire escape, enough said. This review is a result of long term neglect by the owners, and not just something that's happened overnight. I wouldn't pay £1 to stay there again, let alone what they charge
