After a five night stay, here is our review.
Bedroom: excellent. Good size. Spotlessly clean. Very comfortable bed. Good bedding with comfortable pillows. Comprehensive television programmes.
Bathroom: excellent. Good size and spotlessly clean.
Parking: large and secure cr park.
Staff: Having stayed in dozens of hotels in our seventy odd years, we must say that the staff in this hotel are not only the friendliest we have ever encountered but also the happiest! Nothing was too much trouble and we never caught them not smiling. Fabulous people who deserve a real Pat on the back. If only all hotels had these magic staff.
Breakfast: Adequate. The restaurant is woefully understaffed and continuity of hot dishes is poor. But again, the staff extremely friendly. Definite room for improvement in this very important area.
Restaurant and bar: we didn’t eat in the Marco Pierre White restaurant because we are not fond of burgers, pasta and pizza so unable to comment. (There are nineteen framed pictures of Pierre White hanging in the restaurant/bar area including one of him clutching a large chef’s knife by the blade. Found this a bit odd if we are honest). The bar prices are fair and the bar staff so jolly.
Overall, we would thoroughly recommend this hotel, we found it truly first class and will return when next in the area.

I have been staying here a few times a year for at least 20 yeares but this was my first visit since the new owners took over. All the staff seemed to have changed but the new staff, like the old, are all pleasant and anxious to please. Plenty of free parking - always more free spaces than cars wanting to fill them, even if a function is going on. Rooms are spotlessly clean. Some have baths - others showers. Modern electrics with bedside sockets for recharging phones. Bar now better stocked drink wise and snack wise than under the previous owners. A niggle? There was only one girl on at breakfast on both mornings and she was struggling to cope with topping up the coffee and orange juice etc on her own. She was very pleasant, however, and was doing her best. The breakfasts are still of the buffet style which is reasonably extensive - unfortunately some of the items were luke warm on the second morning of my stay. On the other hand on both mornings the pastries were warm which was a pleasant surprise. Other reviewers have mentioned the hotel's easy access from the M5. It also works very well for me coming from the M25 - I leave the M4 at junction 18 and "cut off the corner" by reaching Falfield via Wickwar. I have already booked my next stay at The Gables
