Bear Of Rodborough Hotel

First stay for us at this hotel, a we usually stay (very regularly) at their sister hotel in Tetbury. We were disappointed and found the Bear not to be up to the standards we expected from a Cotswold Inns & Hotels. We booked a superior room and although we had lovely views over the valley, we were in the Country House building which is a characterless modern building with no charm whatsoever. The room was pleasantly decorated and furnished but completely lacking in charm, as were the communal areas. Very different from the pictures we’d seen on the booking. Which leads me to the main problem of that hotel: as this is a recent build, the soundproofing was absolutely appalling. The worst we have EVER had in any hotel, including low-cost chain hotels on the motorway. Our neighbour watched tv the whole evening, and it felt as if he was watching it in our room, we could actually hear the full dialogues. Luckily he slept early but this is not ok for a 4 star hotel, it is not ok for any type of hotel. Appalling. Food was good but service in the pub in the evening was somewhat unfriendly, I ordered beef which was very clearly cooked in mutton fat and when I asked about it, was rather rudely told that no, there was no mutton in there whatsoever, even though the smell and taste were overpowering. Excellent breakfast even though our eggs were overcooked both mornings for both of us. Location is beautiful and if you have a room in the main building I think it might redeem itself a little, but we won’t be coming back.

We've just got back from a fantastic 4 night stay at The Bear of Rodborough. Our superior bedroom was really comfortable and quiet, with great countryside views. Breakfasts were tasty and dinners were good especially the half chicken and chefs fish and chips. There are plenty of attractive areas to sit and enjoy a drink including the large garden or snug bar rooms. The hotel is ideally situated for doing circular walks straight from the hotel around Rodborough Common, the free range cows are an added attraction and one day we walked down to the Thames and Severn Canal. Finally what lovely staff, we met, polite, friendly and helpful, thank you.

Had a lovely overnight break for my birthday. Everything was perfect, lovely room, great garden with super food. Our dinner was very enjoyable. Staff delightful and very professional. Very lovely breakfast too the next morning. Thank you for my card and complimentary drink too, nice touch. All in all a very clean and well run hotel with great quirkiness. We will be back.
