Flodigarry Country House

If Flodigarry Hotel is the last stop before Heaven, I do not need to move on! Everything was just great - the reception, service, rooms, dinner, sauna, surroundings, breakfast, wine - just amazing - value for money.

We happened to stumble upon the Flodigarry by seeing their roadside sign that said the hotel offered a light lunch menu from 12-3. We could not have been more impressed! To start, the view is phenomenal! The bar/lounge where lunch is served is warm and beautifully appointed. The food was phenomenal! We could not have known what a delicious lunch we would experience! The Fish Stick Toastie was made with sourdough, lemon and caper tartar sauce and was topped with melted cheese. It was out of this world! We also had the mushroom soup, which was beyond delicious! The best we’ve had so far! In addition, we had the Gammon and cheese platter which was great and the pickled side that came with both meals was unique and yummy! Our host/barkeep/server Daniel took care of everyone with ease, a friendly manner and attention to detail! What an incredible find!!

Lovely hotel, great location. Felt as though the staff were very inexperienced and although they were friendly they were unsure. The barman sat behind the bar with his back to the room, and we had to ask him if we could order a drink, asked advice re some gins and he gave us a bottle and invited us to smell it… dinner was interesting, menu good but the waiting staff didn’t really know about the menu and blagged their answers rather than saying they didn’t know but would find out. The dish described as scallops with some pork was actually 3 large medallions of pork wrapped in bacon with 2 smallish scallops. The halibut with samphire on the menu didn’t mention potatoes, the waiter said no it didn’t come with any. Lucky I didn’t order any because there were potatoes. The menu said it was ‘ halibut cooked on the bone, smoked haddock brose, samphire and pickled apple’ what arrived on my plate had no samphire, I was served brocolli and beans, and there were a potatoes in the brose. No pickled apple but some braised fennel…. I mentioned it to the waiter who went to get the maitre d’ who offered us a free dessert.,…but no explanation. It really wasn’t a problem except I don’t like fennel! So don’t expect the menu to describe what you will be served, and don’t expect the staff to necessarily know how to handle comments. The strawberry trifle was absolutely not a trifle! Looked pretty but was cream with strawberries in very solid jelly underneath. A children’s party pudding! No sponge soaked in alcohol, no custard…. not trifle. What would be nice is that the menu was accurate, or there was an explanation of availability when ordering. Breakfast was interesting, no buffet, no toast and jams, cereals etc. again a surpsise when I asked for the smoked salmon with scrambled egg and soft crowdie but with toast not the buckwheat pancake. Only the inevitable sourdough toast and when it arrived no crowdie. By this time I had given up! Waiter this morning was the very laid back barman who said as he had left me at the table and walking away, oh we haven’t got any orange juice…..at dinner that night we had asked to sign for the meal, after waiting a while for him to come back I wandered into the bar to ask for a cup of tea to find our waiter dancing behind the bar with the barman….nice but not while people are waiting for service! Just need a bit of staff training, there were plenty of them but none particularly seemed to know what they were doing. Too many ‘how are we this evening?’ And ‘are we ready to order?’ Less of the we please….you are not joining us and it is very patronising
