The Continental

Booked this hotel on booking.com, turned out they cancelled on us same day as our trip. After we had already left home. So a complaint will be going to them. The floor they had us booked us on, the air conditioning had stopped working. Decided to still look at it though, as had no where else booked. Needless to say it was a tad warm, provided with a fan, which was as much use. Anyway let’s talk about the room, bed comfortable, bathroom, very grubby with broken fixings, rusty radiators, hairs left in bathroom, sink cracked, tap was blocked with calcium build up, so not great. Tried pool, okay, tried restaurant, food nice, service good. No English breakfast served only Indian, car park okay, but small. Front of desk staff were good. Would I stay again No.

I booked The Continental Hotel through Booking.com for a stay on 27 December 2025 and it was one of the worst experiences I have ever had with a hotel. Upon arrival, the property looked nothing like the photographs advertised online. The exterior areas and car park were dirty, poorly maintained , and littered with rubbish. What was most concerning was seeing what appeared to be blood on a wall, which immediately raised serious concerns regarding cleanliness and safety. As a result, I went into reception and explained that I was considering cancelling the booking because the hotel appeared completely different from what had been advertised. The receptionist insisted that the rooms had been cleaned and offered to show me the room before I made a final decision. Before viewing the room, I specifically asked whether it was acceptable to park in the hotel car park whilst inspecting the accommodation. I was expressly told that it was. Unfortunately, the room itself was no better. It had a strong unpleasant odour which I can only describe as smelling of urine, and the overall condition fell far below the standard I expected from the photographs and description used to market the hotel. I immediately returned to reception and requested cancellation and a refund. Rather than dealing with the situation professionally, I found the attitude of staff confrontational and intimidating. The entire experience left me feeling extremely uncomfortable, and I decided to leave the premises. After contacting Booking.com and PayPal, I was ultimately refunded. What makes this matter even more concerning is that months later I received a County Court claim from ParkingEye relating to my brief attendance at the hotel, despite being a genuine paying customer, having a valid booking, and having been given permission by reception to park whilst viewing the room. This matter is now the subject of formal complaints and legal proceedings. I have formally reported this hotel to Booking.com and requested a full investigation into both the condition of the property and the way this situation has been handled. Based on my experience, I would strongly advise prospective guests to think very carefully before booking. The property I attended bore little resemblance to the advertised images, the customer service was unacceptable, and what should have been a straightforward cancellation turned into months of unnecessary stress and legal complications. I would never stay here and would not recommend it to friends, family or other travellers.
