Unfortunately we had several problems in staying at this hotel. The main problem being the parking. We have stayed twice, and both times there wasn’t a sufficient number of spaces. On our second visit we had to park at a train station down the road! I then had to drag my children and luggage back to the hotel. This is completely unacceptable. If you do manage to find a parking space, it comes with an additional £5 parking fee. The hotel doesn’t service rooms mid-stay, there is no room service, and service in the dining room is incredibly slow. The couple seated next to us were ready to walk out in disgust before their meal finally arrived. In addition to this, the entrance to the hotel consists of a very small revolving door, so fitting through with large suitcases is a challenge. I believe there was a separate accessible entrance, but I didn’t see it. The main positives of this hotel are its staff, who are polite, helpful and friendly. I’m afraid I would not recommend staying at this hotel. We won’t be staying again.

Cons; Despite being advised that all executive rooms were front facing, ours overlooked the rear overlooking a flat roof. Chairs, in the room, not as comfy as ones shown in the photos. The tap switch, to use the shower instead of the bath, would not stay in position. Public areas are impressive but room decor is quite tired. Sent an enquiry via their ‘contacts’ form three days before our visit. No reply. Eventually phoned day of visit and after a long wait for the phone to be answered I spoke to a very polite and helpful gentleman who answered all my questions. Our executive room was next to a double fire door which banged shut every time someone passed through. The car park was busy and quite tight but that was, in part, down to inconsiderate drivers. Pros; It Was clean. The lady on reception ( Jane) was friendly and accommodating. Waiting staff were very hardworking, helpful and polite. Breakfast was more than adequate , plenty of choice and well cooked. Dinner was also fine. Decent choice and again well cooked. I was a little surprised to find, being on half board basis, that we had to pay a supplement for certain choices. An extra £14.85 for a Sirloin Steak was perhaps a little much. It was good though and prepared exactly as requested. The bar prices were quite reasonable too. I Saw a review that there were not enough USB ports but our room had an adapter with 4 USB an and a USB c . The public seating areas were comfortable and the architecture made it very pleasant. Was upgrading to an executive room worth the extra cost? It’s subjective, I suppose but in my opinion, not quite. We would be happy to stay there again, however. Finally, in the management’s defence, it must be very costly to maintain such a fine old building.
