I wanted to like this hotel more than I did :( It's a nice, traditional style hotel and the room was lovely, clean and comfortable. The few staff I did come across were friendly and helpful. But. It was soulless in the restaurant and bar. As a solo traveller, living alone, I like to stay in a hotel now and again where it's busy and even lively. Unfortunately there were only 6 other people in the very large restaurant with no background music to lighten the atmosphere. On moving into the bar area, there was literally no one in there, again with no music playing so I felt very isolated. I realise this isn't a reason for other travellers not to visit. I am sure in a party or as a couple these things wouldn't matter so much, but it would put me off going again. I did mention it to the receptionist on checking out and she said there usually was background music, and it was generally busier. I know I could have sought someone out whilst sitting in the bar but there was no-one around and by about 8pm I went to the room where at least there was some television noise! It is quite a walk into town but certainly do-able if you're fit and able, but again with being on my own I didn't want to talk back up during the evening the very aptly named Long Hill Road! The hotel is set in lovely grounds though and overlooks Buxton Cricket Club. I'm sure under different circumstances I might have enjoyed it but sadly it wasn't for me on that particular night - Saturday 20th June

Arrived , staff had our rooms ready at midday , the staff honestly couldn't do enough for us both , Jen and Boruzna (hope that's correct) excellent front desk service. Cleaners work endlessly , standard of cleaning close to immaculate. Rooms , fabulous , beds , pillows, , tea making, shower by far the best pressure and the walk in shower excellent , slight thought a rail to hold you up somewhere in and leaving the shower , , but if you're fully fit absolutely no problem . Lift excellent and large , works very silently . Stairs very easily accessible if you don't like lifts , carpets are lovely and thick pile . We had evening dinner, very good quality . Large conservatory, ambience great Afternoon tea was very well presented . Lovely views from the hotel , set in lovely gardens . Watch the cricket on the county ground George and Joel , endlessly giving excellent service. The hotel is lovely and quiet , lovely to relax in , ample soft furnishings. I've stayed in hundreds of UK hotels of all star systems and this hotel easily achieves a four star status , id say 4star + There are small faults , the parking is very tight , the entrance in and out is narrow , there are 40 rooms and 40 car parking places , but people visit, or eat in the restaurant , lunchtime and evenings, they do take places up , this needs regulating if it isn't . The place is used by the DRIVING TEST CENTRE , they do take care parking spots up , so 40 places are never available 24 hours a day . The cost of drinks is like every hotel , so it was expected , but a 200ml of coke at £3.20 , I found exceptionally expensive. Suggest you take your own drinks in with you . They gave you Buxton water free , a nice touch, and it's a very palatable taste . But as I said it's no more expensive than other hotels . Fridges in rooms , much needed , but the rooms were supplied with safes , ironing board , iron , heaps of plug sockets , heated towel rail. My TV was in a somewhat funny position in room 114 , not centralised and the toilet behind the door was strange , reconfiguration needed . But the biggest misrepresentation is not the hotel itself but TripAdvisor , it states it's a level walk to the town centre , I thought it was , but unfortunately a mountain goat is more at home than elderly people, but taxis , even though extortionate , £10 for 2.5 miles are readily available and very quick in answering your call. So a leisurely stroll into the town , doesn't exist, not a disabled paradise I'm afraid to say , but a hikers euphoria Annexe, never went there , but looked ok , but I much preferred the hotel , I felt very comfortable and at home , very rare in hotels today. Suggestion to the new owners , keep all the staff you possibly can , you won't find better or more loyal people anywhere . And room services , carrying your bags to and from is needed by a separate member of staff, specifically for that duty imperative , the staff are hard working and that needs alleviation away from their excellently performed duties Buxton itself has much to offer , loads of eateries and public houses that open very late , and gets extremely busy , bustle and hustle the later the evening goes on , so it's an early doors eating and drinking for the more quiet of us . I would thoroughly recommend the hotel to everyone. I thank everyone for making my stay exceptional
