I was up in Manchester visiting family when I needed to book an overnight stay. It was me and my adult son plus a dog. The only available hotel was the Britannia in Standish. Now as a chain Britannia hotels can be a bit hit or miss but this one is certainly a hit! Friendly staff at reception and there was a slight mix up as we weren't allocated a pet friendly room on arrival but that was soon sorted out. Room was spacious and very clean. The bathroom looked recently refurbished. All communal areas were spotless. We didn't eat there so I can't comment on food but the bar was welcoming with a pool table and plenty of seating. There were no mysterious foreign men hanging around and there were a couple of coach parties but they were friendly. I will definitely stay here again on my next trip as me and my son had a great time and the dog, Princess Aurora, enjoyed it too.

This has to be the worst hotel I have ever stayed in, and I have stayed in hotels all over the world and the UK. Booked two nights so we could attend the Open Golf at Royal Birkdale, we checked in at 20.30 on Tuesday evening only to find the restaurant closed at 20.00, not a good start. Had a couple of beers from the bar, each round was a different price! Had a shower but the NO cold water comes out of the bath tap (shower is over the bath) this makes it impossible to control the temperature of the shower, considering we had a family room, this is extremely dangerous as children staying in the room could receive severe burns from the scalding hot water. When down for breakfast on the Wednesday morning, breakfast starts at 07.00 and we arrived at 7.05. ALL of the cooked food (full English) was 100% stone cold and totally uneatable so we left without breakfast, it was like it had been cooked the night before! After a long very hot day at the golf we returned to the hotel to shower and settle down to watch the England world cup match on the tv and have a beer! Our room had not been cleaned and we were left with wet towels and unmade beds. I reported this to reception only to be told that the rooms are only cleaned every FOUR days, and if you want your room cleaned you have to ask at reception the day before, at no point was we informed of this, no mention on the website, no sign at reception or in the room, and never told to us when we checked in. All the receptionist kept saying they are cleaned every four days and you have to ask, I tried to point out how are we supposed to know if guest are NEVER told. Settled down in the reception area to watch the football (the bar was full and there is a TV in reception) we noticed that a guest kept slipping off to his room and returning with a large bottle of Heineken beer (the bar does not sell this beer) this is breaking the hotel's alcohol licence (it has been reported to the Wigan Council). We decided to miss the stone cold breakfast on our last morning and bought some at the golf. All in all the worst hotel experience myself and my (Adult) son have ever had. I phoned the hotel on Friday morning a spoke to the manager, he assured me he would find the company policy of only cleaning the room every four day and would email them to me, a week later and I'm still waiting! I guess he can't find them and they do not exist. A formal complaint has been logged with Britannia Hotels and I am waiting for my reply. So please for the sake of the money you pay out for a hotel stay please AVOID this hotel and stay somewhere better.
