Excellent stay in this absolutely charming hotel in every respect: magnificent setting 20 minutes from Edinburgh by car, extremely pleasant rooms, warm welcome both at the hotel and at the restaurant. Varied breakfast and very pleasant restaurant. In short, a very good stay!

Ripped off — paid extra for “luxury” service the hotel couldn’t deliver We booked Suite 425 which is the top floor in the front of the building, pictured belowfor July 31, one of the hotel’s top suites, and paid extra hoping for a standard of service to match. Instead, the hotel was so overcrowded it couldn’t meet the basic needs of guests who’d paid for premium service — and when it fell short, they refused to make it right. Breakfast we paid for was effectively unusable, and they wouldn’t refund it. We came down at 9am to a wait of 45+ minutes just to be seated, with every table full and no alternative offered. We ended up skipping it and paying out of pocket elsewhere. When we asked the hotel to refund the breakfast portion of our stay since we couldn’t reasonably use it, they refused. For a hotel charging a premium, that refusal was the last straw. The “upgrade” itself was a stretch. The hotel ran a bidding system for upgrades and encouraged guests to bid at least £300 over the room rate — my husband offered £200, and it was accepted. But the suite, despite having multiple rooms, had only one bedroom (with two bathrooms). The bathrooms were clean, but the rest of the suite felt like it hadn’t been refreshed in years. Slanted floors and painfully slow service. The floors slanted so severely that the foot of the bed sloped noticeably downhill. The in-room phone had no working line to reach the front desk, so we had to look up the hotel’s direct number ourselves. We called at 4pm requesting a fix and ice — ice alone took two hours to arrive, and it took roughly 20 minutes for a manager to come up in person. He explained why the hot water took over 10 minutes to run and had staff wedge blocks under the bed frame to level it — for a one-night stay, this ate hours of our short visit. No elevator access, on top of everything else — the suite is on the second floor, but with 30-foot ceilings that means climbing the equivalent of four flights of stairs with luggage. For what we paid, this fell far short of a luxury standard. We wouldn’t book here again and would think twice before recommending it.

Great location. Out of the city but still central with a handy bus stop at the entrance. Plenty uber and taxis around as well. Nice atmosphere made better by fab staff. So friendly and nothing is a problem. Rooms are decent but 2 doubles in a room for 4 can be a tight squeeze. We asked for a fold out single bed and it was put in straight away and solved the issue quickly. There is zero noise except birds. Pool was lovely with plenty of time for adults only swim and kids swim. Breakfast would feed a nation and no shortage of food and from 7 to 11 it let you start early or have a lie in. The bar staff are so sound and great to give local knowledge. Bar menu is small so if you want dinner make sure to book ahead with the restaurant. The pub across the road is a great call as well with locals and the food there is tasty, filling and a great price. Hotel was very clean and room servicing was top notch. There is a lot of stairs and multiple ways to get to rooms so if you are not quick on your feet make sure to ask for a room closer to reception. I didnt play a single round of golf but there was plenty others so I would say a good course. Staff will be what makes the trip here special.
