St. Andrews Guest House

It is what it is no staff on site basic bedroom but with microwave and fridge which is always helpful. The bedroom and the bathroom were very clean on arrival I was very impressed... The shower cubicle however another matter.. thick black mould around the grouting and the silicon so much so that I had to go to the shop and buy bleach and a toothbrush to clean before I could use it, the shower was also hanging out of the wall could not easily be adjusted for fear of complete collapse

Disappointing. After a stay at four small properties in a week, this one came bottom for us. Sandwiched between a bingo hall and a mini-mart, the area left a lot to be desired. The view from our window says it all really. When we went in (using a texted key code), I initially thought it was a HMO, but then saw tea/coffee and tourist leaflets. There are no front of house staff on site to meet and greet, which some reviewers were happy with, but I feel the term 'guesthouse' is misleading. 'Rooms' or 'bunkhouse' would be more accurate. If I were travelling alone I wouldn't feel safe as staff didn't reply to my texts. The room smelt strongly of minestrone soup for the duration of our stay which was not masked by the plug in air freshener outside our door. There were a few plus points. The room was small but clean, also the beds were comfy. You could hear the residents in the other rooms though. There is free on-street parking outside the front door. Most of the main supermarkets are 5 mins by car which allowed us to buy a pint of milk and some porridge pots for breakfast. Thankfully the rooms have fridges and microwaves. We got the impression the building has been recently refurbished, however there is still work to be finished e.g. the shower needs re-tiling. See pics. We'd booked for the proximity to the Ardrossan ferry (20 mins drive). Hotels are exorbitant for this part of Scotland and the cheaper price point of St Andrews Guesthouse should have made me check other review sites before booking. It seemed too good to be true...and it was. The reviews on their website are clearly only posted if they score highly. This is nowhere near the 4.8/5 stars that it boasts.

We booked for 3 night,s 4 day,s i had to ring the manager as there was no heating and bin,s not emptied he offered us a free night we got a small fan heater that we had to turn off after a few mins and it did not smell good so 3 night without heating iv never been to a guest house where the bedding were more creased before you even get into a bed we got no clean towels in our 4 day,s no bin,s emptied no cleaning i did it myself did not see anyone our key was in our room on arrival and you drop it in a box when you leave there is a microwave (no plates) and tea and coffee plus a kettle enough milk for 2 cups but nothing is topped up our last night was the worst as the people in the next foom had friend in and the noise was ridiculous shouting singing and banging doors could not wait to get home the next morning great location everything you need on the doorstep but would not go back sorry because we love Irvine
