We (two couples) spent three nights at the Grays Court Hotel in early July and had a wonderful experience. First, about the hotel itself; Simply magnificent - it could be a Hallmark movie setting. Spotlessly clean, unique and thoughtfully designed rooms with a courtyard to die for. Wonderful flowers, beautiful lawn, tables with umbrellas and some hidden away for privacy. Just magnificent. And if that isn't enough, the true star of the experience was the service by the entire team. Led by Kendal, the proprietor's daughter who serves as the restaurant manger but is the de-facto general manager, each and every encounter with a team member was a pure joy. We never heard the word "No" during the entirety of our stay. Here's an example..... One day while exploring the town of York we lost track of time and forgot to have a timely lunch. Walking back to the hotel at about 3 and with an 8 PM dinner reservation looming, we needed a little something to tide us over until dinner. So we called the hotel and asked if they could go to our room and retrieve a bottle of wine we had brought with us from Bordeaux, chill it slightly for us and assemble a charcuterie board. When we arrived 30 minutes later we went outside to the courtyard and within minutes our wine arrived with a perfect board of select meats and cheeses. breads and butter and oil and roasted peppers. The next two hours may have been the most memorable experience of our two week vacation. Oh yes, and there is a sweet dog on the property named Nala who enjoys a good belly rub. If we ever return to York, we'd return here in a heartbeat.

Absolutely the best hotel in York, and perhaps one of the finest hotels we have stayed in anywhere. We were visiting from Canada for a month and initially chose Grays Court because of its incredible location beside York Minster. What we did not expect was that it would become one of the highlights of our trip. In fact, we enjoyed our stay so much that we returned later in our travels. Grays Court is much more than a hotel, it is an experience. From the moment we arrived, every member of the staff made us feel genuinely welcome. The front desk team was thoughtful and attentive, helping with taxis, restaurant reservations, and local recommendations, always with warmth and efficiency. Breakfast each morning was a delight. Enjoying full table service while overlooking the beautiful gardens was a wonderful way to start the day. The rooms are elegant and exceptionally comfortable, with luxurious linens and thoughtful touches throughout. The artwork and historic character of the property make it fascinating to explore, and everywhere you look there is another detail to admire. The gardens and grounds are immaculate and provide a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city. Despite being steps from York Minster and all the attractions of York, the hotel feels tranquil and secluded. What stands out most, however, is the level of hospitality. It is increasingly rare to find a hotel where every aspect of the guest experience is delivered so effortlessly and sincerely. We arrived because of the location; we returned because of the people and the experience. Thank you to everyone at Grays Court memorable.

We spent three wonderful days in this hotel, staying in both the Willoughby and Somerset rooms. Willoughby has a lovely view of the garden and the city wall, with a four poster bed and separate bath and shower, while Somerset has a (shaded by trees) view of the Minster and a lovely sofa and chair plus an over bath shower. Each room is unique, and the experience of staying in such a historic building more than made up for not having air conditioning or a mini bar. Despite being centuries old, the hotel was spotlessly clean. Staying here is a special experience. Fans were provided in rooms to cool them during the heatwave, and there are lots of other quiet spaces to relax , including a library. After sightseeing, a relaxing Hugo spritz in the garden with a good book is a real treat. The Bow restaurant is closed early in the week, but there are plenty of restaurants within walking distance and there is a small lunch menu in the hotel. The cafe downstairs in the Treasurers museum next door sells second hand books and novels, with no obligation to do a museum tour to visit the cafe or to buy a book. Breakfast is freshly made to order in the hotel, and staff here are all very welcoming and helpful. We didn’t meet any ghosts, (the ghost tour stops outside the hotel), but if we had, I’m sure they would have been just as pleasant and helpful as the hotel staff were.
