Premier Inn York (Blossom St South)

Our trips usually end up having nightmare trains that are never great. So we usually pick a hotel we know is good, like the Premie. But that was not the case here. Not many positives so I'll start with that. The location is phenomenal very easy to get around and we ended up walking everywhere. The staff that did help us, like Sydney, made the stay much better, got free breakfast too for our whole stay due to the situation. So what happened you say for our 4 days to receive free breakfast too? Other than North and South being next to each other they are so difficult to find. Once you find North, we got given our room and when we entered to relax it wasn't great. The floor didn't seem hoovered and had stuff under the bed. The shower head looked like it had NEVER been cleaned, there was stains on the tables...and there was what I can only assume sick on the toilet. Yup, sick. I asked for it to be cleaned and we left and walked about the city. When we returned nothing was cleaned, the sick was still there. Sydney the receptionist at the time was lovely, came up herself and I showed her and she cleaned it. She offered us free breakfast for our stay. After a bad start I realized they were severely understaffed...and boy did it show. Every single breakfast and I mean every single one had a horrible experience. The first morning there was no plates or cutlery, the tables weren't being cleaned either. People were in queues waiting for plates. If felt like 3 people were working there and I felt bad as they seemed stressed. The second and third days, from what I could assume, the manager was there. The coffee machine stopped working, food was missing, there was no milk, no orange juice and the tables were a state again. One toaster broke down also and we also had to beg for someone to provide us with cutlery yet again. It seems like Premier Inn standard has dropped severely.

Decent room - not madly spacious, but more than adequate for two people - plus friendly, efficient staff, a good-sized bathroom and shower, and a pleasant location. The rooms are arranged in clusters in several buildings around a couple of attractive courtyards. There was some noise in the hotel's Viking Building from drinkers outside in the evening, but everything was quiet from about 9.30pm, so it wasn't a problem. Good position for the railway station and the city centre. A nice touch is that a notice suggests a donation into their Great Ormond Street charity tin in return for storing bags, but there was no obligation. Would recommend.
