Clennell Hall has bags of character and an abundance of history. Is it a bit tired in some places? Yes. Could some things be better? Probably. Focusing on these things though means you miss the point. What the management and staff have done here is, they have built a community. People come from all over to socialise and enjoy the community spirit. Staff are super friendly and helpful.
Singalongs are both entertaining and inclusive. Everyone mucks in and helps each other, so in that respect, it is a throwback to an earlier time when community was both important and nurtured.
Rocky, Roz, Ali, Peter, Toni et al definitely looked after our family when we stayed, two adults, one teenager, and a large dog all catered for and all had a great time.
The hall is sited in an extremely scenic valley and there are lots of local walks in the area and nearby villages to explore. When you return to the Hall after a day exploring, you can become immersed in the various conversations going on between groups in the grounds or in the bar. If you are really lucky, like I was, you may just be entertained by Rocky's fascinating stories, btw 006½ is a great conversation starter.
Some people may not see beyond the minor problems that come with keeping a building of this age functional. This does a great disservice to both the place and the staff.
Do not dwell on the small stuff but take the place as a whole and embrace the community. Do this and you will see that people make places, and that the hall and community together are a diamond. A rough diamond in places sure, but any polish added would only be a bonus. I certainly will be back at my earliest opportunity.
My profound thanks to all of the management, staff, and customers of Clennel Hall that made our stay such a memorable one.
Tony, Rachel, Amelia, and Lola Best.

On arrival this hotel looked lovely with an amazing garden and a lovely looking building. Then we went to our room…….
I’m sorry but this quirky house turned into the dirty house.
Our room, No.9, was facing the garden but the actual window was filthy. Not just the glass, but the inside window frame. There was dirt and cobwebs that had been there for sometime, along with the huge cobwebs on the bedroom walls. I was also worried about what was making them! 🕷️
The bathroom also had a dirty window frame with old cobwebs.
The shower had a very mouldy screen and the shower head pole was hanging off the wall, which meant that when used, the shower head falls off into the bath.
There was no hand soap in the bathroom, so we had to use the complimentary shower gel. The toilet seat did not fit the toilet.
We had a cream sofa in the bedroom which was ripped and very tatty looking.
The staff at the hotel were lovely and friendly, and obviously work very hard as there only appeared to be 3 of them, along with the elderly lady who took the breakfast orders.
This hotel could be lovely with some much needed tlc and a good clean, but unfortunately I will not be returning.
I have read previous reviews, and honestly cannot believe some comments given. My photos will back up my review.
