Schooner Hotel

We stayed 5 nights, but only because we paid up front, couldn't get a refund, and in any event there were no vacancies elsewhere in the area. We spent as little time as possible in the place. I wonder what the owners are trying to do with this place, because running a hotel they are not. Perhaps it's a tax avoidance thing or something more sinister. There was only 1 member of staff trying to do everything (and badly at that). It's a potential death trap as the fire escape has no lighting and is pitch dark. ( One light didn't even have a bulb). The fire notices state to assemble in the car park in the event of an alarm....there is no car park. The hotel details state it is "beachside" but the nearest sand is at least 400m away. I could go on but it won't make any difference, Hotels com should remove this place from their website as soon as possible.

We arrived at the Schooner, to find no one at the small, untidy reception desk, went looking and told to go to the bar. The tables were dirty, upholstered bar stools were stained, dust thick on shelf above the radiator and the carpet was filthy. We checked in and went to our room. That was even worse, dirty, cracked walls, filthy stained carpet and it smelt vile. The thought of sleeping in that bed, in that room was just too much, so we paid to book another hotel. We handed back back the door card and said we are leaving, it is filthy, and the man took it and said ok, like he was use to this happening, didn't stay long enough to take photos, but it is certainly nothing like the advertising photos. Avoid like the plague

Worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in. Upon arrival, the reception desk was empty. I had to go looking for the staff. Once I found someone they gave me the room key and asked if I’d also like breakfast the following morning (it was part of my booking which they clearly weren’t aware of). Got to the room and tried to take a shower. Firstly it was red hot and the temperature dial didn’t change the temperature at all. Then the water wouldn’t drain away, so I was having to try and stop water running out of the shower tray by turning the shower off constantly. In the end I gave up. I told a staff member about this the following morning and as soon as I said the word shower, they said “ah yes I know”. Why let people stay in there knowing that this was broken!? On the evening, I got a meal in the restaurant for ease I I’d been walking all day. It was inedible. Onion bhajis weren’t cooked through and couldn’t eat them. The main came out and I tore a section of garlic naan off which didn’t look appealing to begin with (see photo). It didn’t look cooked in the middle and smelled of raw dough. I just left it on with my curry as I felt sick. I left the following morning without going for breakfast, which was included. I ate elsewhere. To top it off, there was a lot of flies around the restaurant. I get that this may be something affecting the entire area, not just this hotel, but at least put fly zappers up or something to keep them away from people’s foot, drinks, etc… it was very off-putting. Im really annoyed as I spent over £140 for one night’s accommodation and also spent about the same on food and drinks. The customer service I received for that is terrible. I feel like I’ve been robbed. I know this is a huge rant, but I generally always write very measured reviews and give places the benefit of the doubt if I can. This was an exception though.
