Nelson and Railway Inn

We arrived late afternoon after a gruelling trip from central Germany with no aircon on a very hot day. Just wanted a shower and bed. I eventully found the carpark and my wife met me on the stairs down to the room and the look on her face did not bode well. Yes the beds were clean but.... The shower only had hot water and the cold could not be mixed in. We eventually poured some hot water into the bottom of the bath and cold water was added from the sink using the kettle. The bathroom was very warm and we wanted to open the windows. No luck, they were painted shut. There was mould on the ceiling and walls and the wood work looked like someone had taken a hammer to it. Then of course the water would not drain from the bath. The television did not work so we could not watch the world cup football and were advised to go to a neighbouring pub to see any games. The second saving grace apart from the clean beds was the barmaid who bent over backwards to accomodate us. The beer in the old world style pub was good and the atmosphere of the pub was fine. We had breakfast and I had terribe stomach pains driving back home so much so that my wife took over the 6 hour drive. The food was revolting. How difficult is it to make poached egg on toast with beans?? The worst aspect was the booking. What apeared to be a £57 charge for the room appeared on my bill as £87. They had the temerity to add additional costs and the company receiving the payent was in the USA. I was too quick in trying to book the room. USA policy, no cooling off period no refunds under any cirumstances. Again US paymet policies being applied in the UK, really!!! Yes, visit the pub, highly recommended, Do not stay overnight in a run down probably demolition rife building.

What a lovely friendly hotel. We chose to stay here as family live very close by. We had no huge expectations other than hoping for a clean room comfy bed and a bathroom. Well we got that plus more. Friendly staff that would do anything for you to make your stay more comfortable. Di is such a beautiful person and been here longer than anyone, owners included. Want to know it just ask her. I would love to have her as a friend. So warm and caring. Breakfast is basic but good. Full English hot plate. Room is adequate. Bring your own bathroom supplies. (Although lighting is an issue in #8) Tea & coffee, fresh towels daily. Pub meals good value and wholesome. Best toasted sandwiches ever !! Food available all day. Walk to the bus and local shopping Center. Plenty on-site parking. What this hotel lacks in comfort it certainly makes up with friendliness and welcoming staff and locals. It’s no Sangria-la but very happy. Next we are back we will be staying here. Thank you for a wonderful experience.
