We stayed at The Spread Eagle Hotel for our 11th wedding anniversary on 20 August 2026. During dinner, both of our chicken starters appeared visibly undercooked, with pink and translucent chicken in the centre. My wife had already eaten some before noticing. I had eaten only the sections of mine that appeared properly cooked. We immediately stopped eating, returned both dishes and took photographs. The experience completely took away our appetites. We barely ate our main courses, decided against dessert and did not feel comfortable having the breakfast included with our stay. My wife also felt unwell the following morning, although we cannot say with certainty whether this was connected. There was nobody available at reception when we left, so we had to leave our room key on the computer keyboard. I initially held off posting a review because I wanted to give the hotel a fair opportunity to investigate and respond. However, my formal complaint and subsequent follow-up have both been ignored. I have received no acknowledgement, explanation or apology. Being served two portions of apparently undercooked chicken was concerning enough. The complete lack of response from management has made an already disappointing anniversary stay considerably worse. I have now reported the food-safety concern to the relevant local authority.

Bedroom was fine but the bathroom was not particularly clean and in desperate need of refurbishment. The fan didn’t work, the bath panel was rotten and crumbling away. The grout was blackened and mouldy around the mirror and the bath and many of the tiles. Only body wash and liquid hand soap was provided - no shampoo, conditioner or a tablet of soap. The hospitality tray was basic - no herbal teas and no biscuits. Breakfast was uninspiring - the cooked breakfast was good but not much choice of fresh fruit or cereals and no yoghurt. You had to make your own cup of tea using a teabag and a flask of hot water and make your own toast. We arrived at 12:30 and were charged an extra amount as this was considered “early check-in” even though our room was ready.

Always a good stay at the Spread Eagle. We had the Acton suite this stay and it was lovely. Bed was huge just what was needed in the heat. Husband was miles away! 😂
