Appearance - hotel is quite old and tired, but also quite charming. Family room - great space, separate bedroom for the kids with 3 single beds in it. Food in Cocktail bar is the same menu as the lounge. We ate here as the atmosphere seemed more suited to kids rather than the main restaurant. The dinner was delicious, we really enjoyed it. Breakfast - bit disappointing. Not a huge selection given the size of the hotel. No pancakes, waffles or crepes being made fresh which is unusual for a family hotel. Swimming pool is quite small as half the pool is set up for lane swimming, but kids really enjoyed it anyway. Changing rooms are old but are clean and have individual shower cubicles. Our first night the games room was set up with giant jenga, badminton net and other great games. On our second night this had all been taken away which was disappointing. Outdoor playpark seems new and kids liked it. Grassy area outside great for playing football. Stone stairs at front of hotel are terrifying. Hold the kids' hands tightly as they are very uneven and broken! Shower curtain fell down in our bathroom and clattered onto a head (thankfully an adult's) . Reported this to reception staff who didn't seem overly concerned which soured our stay slightly.

Stayed as part of a small family group with an age range of 1-65. The staff were friendly and helpful, particularly in the restaurant for breakfast and dinner. The hotel was comfortable and the location is ideal for visiting local attractions such as Traquair House or travelling further afield around the Borders or to Edinburgh.

Beautiful setting lots to see and do.. hotel is very calming, comfortable and with good food. Outside areas are great to explore
