Cairn Newcastle

Had mixed views about our stay in the hotel. Staff were always very friendly. Music was off in bar by midnight underneath, so able to sleep Room was very spacious but some pillowcases were on inside out, just sraff not paying attention. Bathroom could be improved, nowhere to hang towels at all and sink is tiny, more of a cloakroom size not bathroom, makes it hard to fill kettle as just too small! No info in room about hotels facilities such as bar and restaurant, would be nice to see menu and opening times. If you dont put the sign out your room doesnt get cleaned! We saw a do not disturb sign on back of door, but not the make up our room one on the other side as we never used it. Again information may help in the room. No offer to clean room when pointed out nobody bothered to tell us this, and no clean towels offered. Parking is at the back, but they double up spaces so you may get blocked in or have an early call to move your car! Breakfast straightforward, staff lovely and helpful but need to consider not having meat and cheese together (were touching in display and no separate serving utensil) as doesnt consider vegetarians may not want meat products touching what they can eat. Few small things that can be easily improved. Best part of the visit was the location and local area. Would consider using again

I stayed at The Cairn Hotel for a four night stay whilst visiting family in the North East. First impressions were a bit disappointing, the reception area could have looked a bit more professional, the area behind the desk looked a mess! The guy who checked me in looked more like the maintenance man rather than reception staff. After climbing the stairs to the top floor with my luggage (no assistance was offered and a lift is not available) I made my way to the room. The first thing that hit me on entering was the overpowering smell of drains coming from the bathroom. Despite all of the windows being open the room still smelt strongly of cabbage! The room was a decent size with a large TV, luggage rack and a desk/dressing table with USB sockets. The wardrobe was very small but adequate for a short stay. It contained a hairdryer, iron and ironing board. There were also tea and coffee making facilities. The bathroom was very large with a walk in shower and a heated towel rail, although this didn't appear to be working. This wasn't the only issue regarding the bathroom, the toilet was constantly filling with water, which was very noisy and annoying when trying to sleep at night. The shower had what appeared to be a hand held hose attachment but it was without a shower head therefore deeming it useless! The main overhead shower clearly needed a good clean as it was seriously blocked resulting in a reduced flow of water. The bathroom door had to also be closed at all times to reduce the odour from the drains entering the bedroom. The main issues with the bedroom was just a lack of general cleanliness. There was an item of clothing in the wardrobe that had obviously been left there months ago as it was covered in dust. The lamps and the TV were dusty and there was a stain on the sheet that looked like blood. However, the main issue was the state of the bin. When I removed the bin bag I was shocked to see that the bin looked like it had never been cleaned. It was absolutely filthy, I've never seen anything so disgusting in a hotel! Check out was as underwhelming as my arrival. Had I been asked if I had enjoyed my stay I would have passed on my comments regarding the bathroom issues and the filthy bin. However, the same “maintenance man” checked me out without enquiring. In fact he hardly looked up when taking my key card from me! To sum up, a very average stay. The Cairn is in a great location, a bus stops directly outside of the hotel and West Jesmond Metro is about ten minutes walk away. There are three supermarkets within walking distance and the area is filled with bars, cafes and restaurants. Jesmond is an area that is very popular with students but there are also lots of families living there. Having lived in Jesmond myself many years ago I feel the area still retains a village vibe within a short distance from the city centre. I would highly recommend Jesmond as an alternative to staying in the city. The Cairn hotel could be so much better, it's in a prime location but is seriously let down due to lack of cleanliness!
