First the positive: the hotel was a few minutes walk from the train station and the concert venue (The Piece Hall) we were attending. There are several pay and display carparks next to the hotel. The negative: the carpet in our room was dirty and stained. The bathroom door was dirty and stained. The towel rail in the bathroom was broken. There was no plug in the sink. The shower was a trickle. No coat hangers. Mismatched furniture. No back to the TV remote. Bulb missing in bed light fitting. Awful mattresses. Cheap duvet. Holes in the wall. Dated decor. Blown bath panel. Breakfast was the most scant continental ever seen. In saying all that: it only cost £58 for a Saturday night. ( The couple in an adjacent room paid £136. I'd be pretty upset if we'd paid that!) Would we stay again: NO.

The Ritz it is not! But, if you need a place to crash after a gig at The Piece Hall it can do a job. Numerous beers help. 5 min walk away from the venue. We must’ve got one of the better rooms. It was clean, the bed frame felt like it might give way supporting two hunks but it lasted. The reinforced leg must’ve held it together (see picture). Bathroom was fine, carpet felt fairly new. The room needed a lick of paint, looks like they’ve blown their budget on kitting reception out. Staff were decent. Can’t grumble too much, I’ve stayed in worse.

The positives first, it is close to town…now onto the negatives: The room we stayed in was tired. The furniture was probably 2 days away from heading to the local tip. The mattress was spring side up on the bed, when we went to turn it over it was like handing the Turin shroud based on the organic matter staining the mattress. Toilet roll is obviously at a premium in Halifax as we only had a half a roll for the weekend. The lights in the room are all or nothing, collapsed sun or pitch black. The whole place has the feel of a hostel, apart from the price. This one scores low due to its likeness to a municipal tip, which is one up from students digs
