We booked a room at Pennine Manor Hotel on Saturday, 4th July, while visiting friends in Slaithwaite. Due to car trouble, we arrived on a tight schedule before a dinner reservation in Slaithwaite, with our local friends waiting for us in the car whilst we quickly checked-in, dumped our bags and changed. Upon check-in, we were assigned Room 17, but we spent time searching for it because it had no door number, which the receptionist forgot to mention (however he did pop up a minute later to explain which door it was). When our key card failed to open the door, the receptionist tried multiple alternatives to no avail and informed us the door required a 10-minute reprogramming. To wait out the delay, we invited our friends inside to the hotel bar.
The service at the bar was abysmal. After waiting minutes with nobody there to serve us, an unenthusiastic female bartender took our £26 round order. When paid with £30 cash, she claimed to have no change and shockingly instructed our 82-year-old friend to go upstairs to a busy function room bar to get it. Our friend went but returned empty-handed. Due to the crowd, I think she felt a little overwhelmed.
Shortly after, the receptionist informed us that the room was completely inaccessible and the hotel was fully booked. He initially offered to move us to The Old Golf House Hotel, which our local friends advised against due to poor reviews and its prior utilisation as an asylum hotel, so he agreed to book us into the Cedar Court Hotel instead. Before we departed, our elderly friend requested her £4 change from the bartender, who subsequently slammed the coins onto our table with attitude and walked away.
Because of the extensive delays, we went straight to our dinner reservation and planned to check in later. Ahead of traveling to Cedar Court that night, I called the hotel to confirm our room, only to find they had no record of our stay. I called Pennine Manor back, and the same receptionist realised he had mistakenly placed the reservation under the name of the guest in Room 18. He did not offer to rectify the mistake, which meant I had to coordinate with Cedar Court myself. Had we not checked, we would have arrived stranded at 11:00 PM.
Management clearly failed to inspect a newly converted room prior to our arrival as they couldn’t even get into it. While the hotel technically attempted to re-accommodate us, the execution was entirely inadequate, stressful, and riddled with mistakes.
Most unacceptable, however, was the disrespectful and lazy treatment of our elderly friend by the female member of bar staff. The level of inconvenience was frustrating, and we cannot recommend this establishment. In fact, we would advise to stay clear based on our experience.
