This was our third visit. We have always loved the river location, the ease of parking, and the easy walk to the cathedral. Staff are lovely - friendly and helpful. Breakfast more than adequate and we could sit outside and enjoy the river. However we felt the rooms needed an upgrade. Bathroom is basic. No room fridge. No AC. Bedside lights not working. Carpet is dated. But bed comfortable. I feel conflicted with this review as have very happy memories of this hotel, and no criticism of staff, but it has started to feel 'tired'.

Lovely old hotel in walking distance to cathedral and town. We had a mini suite that was spacious and had everything you needed. Breakfast was good and service was excellent.

We had a brilliant riverside rest watching kingfishers cross the water and with the Cathedral spire poking through the trees in the distance. The walk into town was brief so location couldn't have been be better. The room was large, had no mini bar (remember this place bills itself as 4 star), had a creaking floor and an old fashioned but serviceable (just) bathroom. There was a considerable walk from reception to the room so we kept fit. Just as well as there was no gym. (4 star don't forget). The costs were tolerable but on the expensive side. Being charged for the car park was a Ryanair plus as was having to leave £25 against your credit card in case of breakages. Clean enough and quiet where we were miles and miles away from the bar and the restaurant. Food was okay although breakfast lacked any kind egg other than scrambled, getting a cup of tea was a scrum and there was no porridge I could find. What else do you expect out of hotel? A map, they gave us one of those and staff were always attentive and always friendly. Finally I do wonder how not servicing the rooms (ie leaving the guest to make their own beds) was helping save the planet. But we did enjoy it all.
