Travelodge Birmingham Central Broadway Plaza

Unusual Travelodge which is part of "Broadway Plaza", a development that was opened in 2003 and which features a cinema, bowling alley and eateries in addition to the hotel. Wife and I were part of a group of 6, some coming by car and some by public transport. We were able to park in the basement car park of the Plaza, which isn't cheap but is also not unreasonable at £12 a night. There are no identifying letters/numbers by the parking spaces so you'll need to remember where you parked. From there you can get stairs or a lift up to the first level of the Plaza, then a 30 second walk to another lift which gets you to the Travelodge entrance. Fairly convenient and possible to do step free. For public transport there's a tram stop 5 minutes walk away and bus routes a similar distance. What stands out about this hotel is the staff. Jeffery, who checked us in, was great and went above and beyond to get us extra fans and to recommend sights to see. But all the staff were lovely. Rooms are pretty standard Travelodge type with everything you need but no frills. You get a decent sized space, bed, desk, couple of chairs, TV, fan, extra pillows, and a window that opens a crack plus a few electric sockets. It's plenty for a few nights. We arrived during the July 2026 heat wave and really noticed the lack of air con. The windows open to the mezzanine of the Plaza and despite canopies they never really cool down. One of the lovely members of reception staff did say that air con was something they needed to add next time the hotel is refurbed. To be fair, that's not standard at Travelodges and this kind of weather used to be freak. In most weather conditions it's going to be fine. The bar/cafe area was quite bright and does have air con, so we did spend time hanging out together there. Wife and I had one breakfast, which is served buffet style. It sticks to the basics, scrambled egg, mushroom, hash browns, bacon, tomato, eggs, toast, croissants and cereals. But it's good enough, certainly no complaints from any of us. Two of the group also had a dinner there and reported that they enjoyed it. The bar is well stocked for the usual drinks you'd expect, and service is pretty rapid despite staff doubling as receptionists and bar tenders. They had plenty of ice and water/juice on tap too. There's various eateries at the Plaza plus a Morrisons a few minutes walk away by the tram stop. Also a vending machine with water/fizzy drinks/snacks in the lobby of the hotel. Everything worked in the room and the heat was the only problem - not something the staff can control!

This is a mixed review over a weekend. Friday - checkin quick and great, however issues started when it was clear booking had an error, Tom fro central reservations was absolutely useless and staff at desk did best and contacted a manager by message, left to resolve in morning. We had pre booked dinner however, this took a while and came out in pieces for a family of 8. Saturday - much better, manager was aware of issues, straight away said e-vouchers to be provided to account (not got yet) spoke to kitchen authorising kids meals for evening. Breakfast was good for size of hotel as was coffee. Saturday evening dinner was much better came out all at once and whole party of 8 really happy, different cook/chef called Ronald, hats off to him. Service with smile and a pleasure to thank him in front of colleagues on Sunday morning. He made all the difference and in our opinion the best employee of the break. Rooms are a little tired but this is a travel lodge and this did not impact the stay.

Unfortunately not great. Room and bathroom very tired and run down, some items broken/needing replacing. Tv remote didn’t work, no hair dryer in room had to go to reception with wet hair to get one. Room was very noisy at night due to the bowling alley open till 23:00, constant thudding of bowling balls, not ideal with young children trying to sleep. Corridors smelt awful, really strong smell of cannabis, No veggie items at cooked breakfast unfortunately, compared to premier inn where they always have veggie sausages and bacon. Only scrambled egg no other egg choices i.e fried ,juice was more like squash. Very basic breakfast overall. On a positive - Staff were very friendly and helpful- can’t fault them at all.
