THE PAVILION HOTEL

Location is fine but the beds are uncomfortable.

(I'd actually give it 3.5 stars if I could) There’s a lot to like about The Pavilion. Its location is right in the center of Avalon, with ferry and cruise ship tourists constantly coming from and going at all hours. The main street is quite noisy, but this property feels like a quiet retreat. Unlike many other properties, this one has AC , which was needed during our recent stay in the middle of a heat wave. The landscape is gorgeous--so tastefully and meticulously maintained. Most of the staff were helpful and courteous. The property provided reusable water bottles and a place near the lobby to refill our bottles. The suite we were in was spacious and the shower, with 3 shower heads, almost made up for all the negatives. We paid over US $1,000.00/night. For a thousand dollars/night we would have expected: • A working elevator or someone to deal with our luggage. We lugged the suitcases ourselves. • Bathrobes and probably slippers in the room. We got bathrobes after asking, but they weren’t provided. • Clean lounge chairs on our balcony and a swept patio. Instead we had to clean the chairs on our little balcony ourselves. • Some place to put toiletries in the bathroom. Double sinks in the bathroom would have been nice. We got a single sink and no drawers or shelves to put our stuff in. There was adequate counter space but not great. • Hooks in the bathroom to hang towels near the shower so they could be easily reached. • Since a breakfast came with the room, I’d expect something more than one gets at the Hampton Inn. The Pavilion’s was actually worse. It included stale croissants and muffins, instant oatmeal that was awful, overripe fruit, pasty bagels, and a hard-boiled egg. When I asked for black tea, the front desk person sounded quite put upon --no one else was available to help me. • Cutlery with the breakfast. Instead we got compostable cutlery that broke and that was thrown in the garbage rather than being composted. • Wine and a “charcuterie board” as advertised. Instead we got one wine ticket which allowed one stingy pour of cheap wine, a couple of cheeses cut into cubes, and some crackers. • My brother’s room was far from spacious. In fact, it barely had room to walk around the bed—for over $600.00 USD.

My husband and I stayed at the hotel with my 2 sons and their families...kids 7, 9 and 12. It is easy walking distance from the Catalina Express boat dock and centrally located for all the restaurants and activities we wanted to do. The staff are so friendly and helpful. It has been recently remodeled- rooms look terrific; lovely landscaping and a lanai to sit outside under. Breakfast was delicious. It is right across the street from the beach, for swimming and sand fun. Even after we checked out they lent us towels and there is access to showers so the kids could go swimming and clean off afterward. I totally recommend this for a family vacation.
