Kellogg West Conference Center and Hotel

My wife and I spent one night here this weekend as we had friends getting married at Kellogg House on the campus. It's very clear even from the website that this place isn't lavish and there's no breakfast etc. so we knew all that going in but we were overall happy with what we got for our money ($160 all in). We could have paid more and stayed in a chain hotel that was a little more fancy and had those things but we opted for this. To equate it to airline standards, this would be Economy Plus. Checking in was a little interesting as we asked (at least a week in advance) for early check in at 1.30pm due to the timing of the wedding. We arrive and the front desk guy was pleasant but a little too laid back so he needed a nudge. We arrived at 2.15pm and the room was still being finished off. Anyway, we get to the room, a very quick change later, and we were good to go. There was confusion over whether there was shuttle between the hotel and the venue but we got an Uber anyway (less than a mile between but not walkable in wedding attire). The whole place is a little rough around the edges and a touch dated but it's not meant to be a destination hotel or a vacation spot so, that's totally fine. The corridors to the rooms are a little clinical but the rooms themselves are totally fine and serviceable and have what you need. They are also a good size so you won't feel cramped - and they have some connecting rooms. We were hardly in there other than changing and sleeping so it worked fine. Again, a little dated and lived in but totally okay and what you would expect for a conference center hotel room at a university. Generally very clean (aside from a few hairs in the bathroom) and some marks on the ceiling (looked like water staining) but, again, this wasn't a vacation trip, it was to save us driving back to LA. The bed was great, the pillows were great, and the sheets were clean and tidy so that's all good. If I had been here for a conference, I would have still have been totally happy. It's not meant to be a swanky, it's meant to be functional and it does that perfectly well. There was a fridge in the room and there's a little store in the lobby so those craving boxes are ticked. You could do a lot worse than this off campus - and there are some pleasant views here too. As others have mentioned there are stairs and I didn't see elevators (especially between floors of rooms) so if you have mobility issues or requirements, be aware of that and make them aware when booking. Check out was easy, friendly and quick. There was fresh coffee and iced water in the lobby. If we had to attend there again, we'd stay here again.

Rooms were spacious and quiet. Staff was very welcoming and engaging. Food was outstanding. Will definatly visit again Room view overlooked wooded area and was very serene and tranquil. Room was just a short walk to conference center.

I was honestly shocked at what a sub-standard property this turned out to be. It was only upon arrival when I asked what time breakfast was, were we told that was discontinued for now. When I asked about the fitness center advertised, same answer. When I was told there was "no maid service" I would've just cancelled and left had we not had a long drive and been there for only one night. The front office is run by Cal Poly students. The room was extremely shabby. Torn bed skirt, sheets that didn't fit and while I am very petite, the bathroom (without a functioning lock, mold around the caulking and an old rubber mat) was truly the smallest bathroom I think I've ever encountered. The cable reception was spotty, and I had to clean the patio chairs which were absolutely filthy to sit outside as the room smelled moldy and damp and we wanted to air it out. The AC was so loud it kept us up all night. Dirty bed linens were in a big pile outside out door and still there when we left at 8 am. I travel a great deal, and other hotels charging the same fees have functioning fitness rooms and breakfasts if advertised. Truly a surprising and very poorly run and maintained facility.
