Howard Johnson Marina At Monte

The property was very clean, and convenient to CSUMB. Breakfast included was nice, and large fridge included. Staff was great. The reason for the three star rating was due to poor wi-fi and it was loud at night being next to a busy gas station. It is a cute property.

Not recommended. Hotel is in the back lot behind a gas station. Noisy with lots of traffic going by. We arrived at our room and discovered a group of people smoking weed on the patio right outside our door, which of course wafted into the room through the crack under the door, along with the traffic noise.

We have stayed here at least 5 times in the past 4-5 years. The first two stays were lovely. We drive from SD and we had gotten in late but they were welcoming and allowed us to come in the store, grab some waters and snacks etc. We had a great stay those first two times. The past three visits, have gotten progressively worse. Oddly, there has been a large black fly in the room the last three visits, no biggie, but odd. Noise/Smell - Three visits ago, the guest next to us fell asleep with his tv BLASTING and kept us up all night. When it wasn't the tv, is was the insanely loud snoring. The last visit, we were in an upstairs room surrounded by a group that came in on a bus. They ran back-and-forth between rooms all night cooking the smelliest greasiest meats. Our whole room smelled horrific and they were SO loud. The worst part, however, was that there was one man who stood outside our room all night and all morning the next day, coughing like he had some horrible illness. I have never heard anything like it. He never went in, he just stood outside hacking up a lung non-stop. After finally getting a few hours of sleep, we woke up to that horrible greasy meat smell all throughout our room. Convenience - This visit, I asked that we be placed in a room on the end. They did grant that request initially, however, we got in late and needed snacks and waters. The person at the gas station store would not let us in and he did not speak English. We have NEVER had anyone not open the doors for us since we've stayed here. If he at least could understand English, it would have been fine. This person was impossible. He didn't know what we were asking for, he grabbed all the wrong items or told us they were out of what we wanted, despite us showing him pictures. While we were standing there, another gentleman came up and asked for an energy drink, he brought him the wrong one after looking in the beer sections for 5 minutes straight. Another man asked for a receipt for gas, and he told him he didn't know how to print it. Finally, us and the guy behind us all went to 7-11 and gave them our business instead. Wildly disappointed in this place. We have had too many issues at this point. They also have no cards or games at the gas station, just a heads up. Maid Service - Maid service is almost non-existent. When we got in our room, I used the restroom and the TP was out. I tried to replace it with the backup roll but you need a key. What kind of maid leaves that little TP on a dispenser that can't be refilled without their key!? On top of this, we checked in on the 24th and checked out on the 28th and a maid only stopped by ONCE on the 27th. We asked if they could come back in a little bit and they just never returned at all. Noise - Lastly, three nights in, our "quiet" room was anything but. They put the loudest family above us whose kids sounded like they were doing parkour at night and in the mornings sounded like they were rearranging furniture. If we asked for a quiet room, they should have put us on the 2nd floor so no one was above us! The last morning they woke us up at 7am being insanely loud for an hour. This will be our last stay here. Skip this spot.
