Merritt House Inn

Great location with walking distance of wharf and shopping, and a very short drive to Cannery Row and aquarium. Both our double rooms were clean and uniquely decorated. Both were situated to walk out to garden/terrace. Helpful front desk/reception. Safe parking area ($25 extra), complimentary logs for in-room fireplace, light breakfast options (eat in or grab and go). A great value! We will stay here again if we are in Monterey!

My son was running his first marathon in Big Sur and I searched local accommodations to best serve our needs for the weekend. As a long-time follower of TripAdvisor for world travel, I was a bit unsure of the review of Merritt House Hotel. However, I would absolutely recommend this place while staying the area without reservation. From the communication for a late arrival (Thank you Erica) to the arrangements, warm greeting in the morning exceeded expectations. The location is ideal for visiting the nearby shops, restaurants, pier, and other notable sightseeing. The room was nicely decorated, was very clean, beds were comfortable and room included small refrigerator. We stayed in room 5 which had a lovely entrance to the garden. I would highly recommend the access to garden as you can pull curtains at night for privacy. There is a VERY charming small room for a continental breakfast in the morning, and it is kept clean, stocked and has an amazing wall mural of Monterey which is not to miss. The general manager, Jason, was the perfect host and was attentive, personable and well-organized drifting between the breakfast room and the front office to promptly meet the needs of guests. The housekeeper recognized I was preparing to leave the room on the second day and very politely came back later. We parked at Merritt House ($20 per night-very reasonable) and while I read about the tight spots (yes they were), it was very convenient. We had NO problem finding the driveway at night that was mentioned previously. If you put the location on your map, you won't have any problems. What a charming historic building with lovely grounds. It was peaceful, quiet (except for a little noise upstairs at midnight which awoke my runner) and a wonderful reprieve from all too many business hotel stays. If you need ultra-modern and don't like mature landscape, charm and personal touches, look elsewhere. I'll be back! Thank you Merritt House Hotel.

I was pleasantly surprised by how well cared for this property was. The rooms were cute and clean. The courtyard in the middle was a lovely place to have coffee in the morning. We were in a downstairs room so there were French doors to the courtyard from our room. The continental breakfast has pastries, bagels, apples, oranges and little yogurts. Everyone who worked there was pleasant. It’s conveniently located. The parking was a little difficult because they have tried to create extra spaces in addition to the covered spots. The only downside was that none of us found the mattresses comfortable. My son described as hard but springy.
